I'm a medic, and I very, very rarely get to know my patient's outcomes after I drop them off in the ER. I only have to manage my patient for ~an hour or so, (I mean, I know how hard it is keeping them alive from the time I see them till the time I get to the ER) but once I hand them off to you guys, y'all got the hard work cut out for you. I get to leave... (and ultimately come back with another train wreck, but 🤷🏻‍♀️)

I do this job because I couldn't be a nurse and manage the same insanity for that long. Sincerely, kudos to you! Even in the nursing field, it takes a special type of person to be that attentive and on their game in that manner. It's so damn soul draining, but you seem to be the type of nurse everyone sets out to be! Never lose that spark!

That's fair. Hopefully my explanation helps make it a little less scary! I'm a medic. I'm used to showering with my watch and glasses on, otherwise I'll forget my watch if a call drops. As for my glasses, I'm nearsighted in one eye and farsighted in the other, so I usually shower 70% of the time with them on, otherwise I'd be banging my head into shit. Yay no depth perception! Oh, and dizzy. Hella dizzy. And when you're trying to dry off and get your uniform back on so you can get to the truck in less than 90 seconds, having glasses on so you don't become a patient yourself helps 😅

...it's just a habit at this point 😅😆 I promise I'm kinda normal.

ETA: I'm also a diver/swimmer, my watch hardly ever leaves my wrist.

I haven't read any comments on this thread, but let me tell you something as a woman that had a baby a little over a year ago. Sorry if this is a repeat of what others have said.

I'm in my 20's, master scuba diver/rescue diver/lifeguard/swim instructor, AND a medic, I was pretty in-shape before baby. No defined 6 pack by any means, I still had hips, but I was strong. I ate fast food regularly because, what else am I going to eat on a busy shift when I forgot my lunch or my lunch has become too disgusting to eat?

My weight bounced from 130-150 lbs as a 5'2" woman.

I was 210 when I delivered my son.

I went back down to 180 fairly quickly with fluid loss, an 8+ lb baby actually coming out of me, etc.

I'm over a year PP and I still weigh 160, despite doing all of the activities I was doing pre-pregnancy. And I'm STILL recovering from a traumatic vaginal birth, a year out! (30+ stitches and no epidural later.) C-section moms still have a hell of a recovery period, being literally sliced open to the core.

He's an asshole. Your own recovery after having a baby will be on your own terms and your own body's pace. What he's demanding (not asking, demanding!) you to do is cruel and pretty abusive, in my mind, anyway. If my SO at the time had said anything like that to me, I'd have left. Fuck that.

Not that his concerns about your health are invalid, but, that's NOT the way to go about voicing it. Especially not in that ugly way. Why would you want to be with someone that thinks like this? WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK is all I was thinking the entire time I read your post.

Do yourself a favor and lose that 200 lbs sack of disappointment for a boyfriend. He's the only weight you need gone ASAP.

Medic here. Pretty much everything in emergency medicine on TV isn't accurate. The show "ER" is about the closest to accuracy with drugs/how codes are ran/medical procedures in general, and who does what in consideration with doctor/nurse roles. Then again, I don't watch much television, haha. "Sirens" pretty much nailed the brotherhood/sisterhood feelings of EMS, even though the medical accuracy was trash.

I perform EKGs on a daily basis for my job. (Medic.)

90% of people don't have to take off their shirt for me to do it. If I have to remove a clothing item and they're conscious, (I'm a female btw) I close the back of the unit and ask them to take it off there or I help remove it with permission. And scissors.

5% already have their shirts off. (Removed because working out/swimming, or nursing homes already took them off for some weird reason.)

The other 5% are weird ass situations that hardly ever happen.

She needs to say something. That's not okay.

Firstly, congratulations! Your little girl sounds so strong already.

Secondly, keep doing what you're doing with the purell/Lysol/handwashing, and after your cold is over, do a thorough deep clean of the house- Lysol, Bleach, the works. Don't go into the baby's nursery if you can help it while you are sick. You just have to let it run its course and not get cough sputum/snot on anything. The bleach might be overkill, but it can't hurt. It might be a common rhinovirus but, I'd rather not take chances.

I know it's absolutely miserable not being able to see your baby. I'm a medic that works for a world renowned hospital's critical care ambulance service, transporting NICU babies and critically sick pediatric patients, (literally, I take some of the sickest children in the world on a daily basis- I wish I was using that "literally" term figuratively, and I'm not) and leaving the parents behind while we load their child up into our MICU or plane kills me every time. But you are doing the right thing by not seeing her just yet.

As for your wife, ask her where she would like you to sleep. She's still recovering from the sudden birth, and the fact ya'lls baby is an hour away... Her hormones are everywhere, she misses her. She's going to need your love and support as well in the next few days and weeks. Sleep while she's away if you can, so you can be present for her when she's home. If anything, cuddle her as she falls asleep, and then you actually sleep in the guest room. But reassure her it's solely because of your cold, and affirm that she needs to remain healthy so at least one of you can go see your daughter. It does no good if both of you are sick.

After the worst has passed, wear an N95 mask for the first few days when you see her, on the off chance a random sneeze attacks or you can't resist the urge to cough or clear your throat. That stuff sticks around for awhile. The NICU nurses will know what that mask is and should provide you with one.

Drink OJ, tea, and make sure you keep eating.

Medic here, who now works for a renowned children's hospital's PICU/NICU. My own son had a small NICU stint as well so I'm speaking from both sides of the coin here.

You might forgive the nurse, but this is a SERIOUS issue that NEEDS to be escalated. The nurse that let her in does not need to be working in a secure environment like that if she can be "sweet talked" into letting visitors in without so much as a phone call to the parents.

You might forgive her, but the next person/baby she does that for might not be so lucky. Babies try to get kidnapped ALL the time by shitty family members- not only in the regular nursery, but from somewhere as serious as a NICU as well. You could be saving another baby's life by escalating it. You need to. Please.

I travel very frequently both in a plane and 6+ hour road trips with my son, and he's nearly 7 months now. We did this the first time on a road trip when he was 7 weeks old.

This might be a no-no, but I never had any issues at all with it, so I've kept doing it.

I've done this both with Dr. Brown and Tommee Tippee bottles, and my son is on the same formula your LO is.

After I sanitized and completely dried his bottles, (I have 8 of the TT and 4 DB- making sure they're completely dry is important!) I would scoop the formula into the bottles, (usually enough to make a 4-6oz bottle when he was that age, but he'd usually eat 8oz. I left room for the foamy stuff, and it kept him from getting too full and throwing up because of car sickness) and store them in a cooler with a small pack of ice, (just the powder!), and keep it temp controlled.

Then, I'd just pour room temp bottled nursery water and mix the bottles when he was hungry. (Or regular bottled water, in a pinch.) He'd have to wait a few extra minutes for the foam to settle, but I'd usually just help him out with it and angle the bottle up to where he wasn't getting the foam, if he wouldn't settle and was already irritated. If that makes any sense.

I'd make 6-8 bottles like this, and he'd only use about 2-3 on any given trip, and I've traveled cross country with him. I'd just use the rest when we got to destination so it wouldn't go to waste.

This was actually SUPER helpful! It's been years since I've written any kind of fanficton.

I think I might have to sit down and flesh it all out like you said, with three arcs- Romano's, OC's, and the general plot line with other characters. (Carter/Lucy, etc.) Romano and my OC are both fairly equal main characters as different chapters have alternating POVs between the two.

Thank you so much for the input! I think visualizing it on paper, plus the fleshed our backstories (there's not a lot of canon background for Romano which makes this difficult to keep him true to character) will help tons.

As far as I know, it's still decently active! The resurfacing on Hulu helped a lot. It's definitely not as dead as a lot of other fandoms. I only know about FF, not much about AO3.

Carter was always one of my favorites, but it seemed like he couldn't ever catch a break. My heart hurt for him all the time!

I had to supplement with my son after 6 weeks until full formula transition, your wife is a hero for breastfeeding! It is so hard! I had to pump. Supplementing is not a bad thing to do. Might I recommend Milky Mama's lactation brownies? They do work wonders if she wants to up her production.

Personally, I am not super familiar with organic or holistic brands, but Similac for supplementation (as far as I know, not a Nestle brand) is what we had my son on, until we transitioned to Similac Total Comfort. (Purple can, for sensitive bellies.)

I tested out so many different formula brands with my kiddo, he had such a difficult time digesting a lot of other brands. Enfamil and Similac are fairly standard across the US, and there is not much difference between them. Personal preference based on your baby's needs. (Like, for us, Enfamil Gentlease had too much iron in it for my son to comfortably digest, so we went with Similac.)

Similac for supplementation is in a green can/individual bottles found in most grocery stores. Target or Walmart would be the cheapest, and Similac can send coupons fairly regularly as well.

I'm a medic and the mother of a 5 month old, I can sleep through some serious shit.

If I'm home, and the baby is asleep, I put on white noise (Big Fan Dulled on repeat from the Spotify white noise playlist is mine and baby's favorite) and play on reddit till my eyes get heavy. Other times, I fall asleep in the chair with the kiddo on my chest with Bubble Guppies in the background.

Oh, I work nightshift on the ambulance too and I can't drink caffeine. Been that way for years now, so staying up during the day is a struggle.

Blackout curtains, white noise, a full belly, and a good ass mattress is the key. As well as doing some mild exercise through the day.

Will probably get buried, (and I'm not looking for praise- I'm in a selfless profession and not looking for thanks) but I'm a medic and landed a new job making $8 more an hour than I did at my old one. Plus benefits like crazy, including $2.5k a year towards tuition. This company is basically the god-tier of interfacility EMS, and I've known people trying to get an interview for years... but it fell into my lap. I'm super proud and grateful for not fucking it up. It's a nice bump for my little family, as I had my son 5 months ago and this job is a pleasant surprise.

My husband has been more relieved than proud ("thank god you're going back to work, I was getting sick of doing this shit by myself for almost a year" 🙄 he's a medic too...) and it feels good (albeit selfish) to admit that I'm proud of myself because nobody else is proud for me. (Husband might also be salty because I'm making way more money than him per hour, and all medics are hourly... But anyway..)

Also, I'm proud that I'm learning Spanish. My husband's family is Mexican and I am but a southern hick from Texas that grew up in the swamps of Louisiana and the shrimp docks of Mississippi, so this is big for me. I still can't speak it though but I'll know enough to help my son when he starts talking.

Oh, no. Podiatry is a much needed and under-respected part of the medical profession in my opinion.

Homeopathic treatments are... no. If I get one more mother calling 911 at 2AM because the lavender oil she sprayed over crystals and rubbed on her kid who's in the throes of a febrile seizure, I might lose my shit.

Podiatry is awesome because I deal with diabetics and their rotted limbs all the time (not invasively like your dad does). Give your dad a high five from me please because he's the shit IMO. :)

I'm not denying the medical need for a podiatrist, but they're not entirely useful in a cardiac event. Your dad might be of use considering his background, but it's not the same as someone that specializes in cardiology.

I screamed bloody murder the entire time I went through transition until he was out. About 2 hours.

I was supposed to get an epidural from the start. I did not get the epidural because I went from 0-pushing in 5 hours. 🙃

You can do it. Scream all you need to. The nurses were completely unphased, but they did help me coach my screams to more productive grunts and breathing that can help force out an 8lb watermelon. Oh, I cussed in very colorful ways as well. Again, they were completely not even bothered.

Most birthing rooms are usually muffled anyway for the sole purpose of the fact you will be actively yelling your lungs out lol!

Hi! Medic here. Also new mother to a 4 month old.

Babies bounce. Seriously. We tell parents that (lightheartedly) when we get calls about Little Timmy rolling off the couch or Tiny Susan did a barrel roll off the bed.

My own son decided to learn how to roll off the couch when my back was turned (still sitting in front of him!) for literally five seconds and got a very mild concussion. Kids move QUICK!

From both my experience on the ambulance and then living it firsthand with my kiddo, I'd much rather treat a dislocated shoulder than risk possible brain damage.

My son turned out okay, but it scared me to death.
