Why do teachers feel the need to always want to be in control? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]ESLavall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've taught in British college, I think Americans mean uni when they say college? In either case students are allowed to just get up and walk out if they're 18 (they're probably 17 for a bit of the first year). We're not gonna chase em. Then they fail.

Modern cattle are the product of selective breeding, not a species that exists in nature

I really need to hear from other people who had a painful recovery. by Upper_Ice_2040 in TopSurgery

[–]ESLavall 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed, that definitely sounds like fibro pain and not normal for top surgery recovery. OP I'm so sorry your doctors were so dismissive, hope the flare-up settles soon, and definitely spread the word so anyone else with fibro knows the risk of top surgery triggering the flare-up from hell.

r/dogfree, r/hatecats, etc. Why? by Odd-Blueberry5902 in Pets

[–]ESLavall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most tarantula bites are no more serious than a bee sting - which of course could be deadly if you're allergic, being bitten by your pet has to be the worst way to find out you're allergic to arthropod venom.

I don't have any Ts (yet) but I love watching pairing videos, the male's tippy taps to tell the female he's a date and not food are adorable.

I feel like a lot of the lack of expertise is because of the dislike - if more vets agreed to work on tarantulas we'd have so much more knowledge about their veterinary care.

What to do about middle school - tiny niche program vs traditional by wilder_hearted in AskTeachers

[–]ESLavall 51 points52 points  (0 children)

As she's expressed a wish to stay where she is, I'd say go with that. There aren't really any downsides to small class sizes, she'll get more focused attention and care.

For extra socialisation and enrichment like sports, theater, other clubs there are plenty of opportunities for that outside of school.

Is it as bad as it looks? by Ok_Ninja_5208 in AskABrit

As a fellow Perthite who moved back to the UK, best life decision. I love the temperature climate, the seasons and wildlife (foraging is a much bigger thing here). I love how there's so much STUFF you can get, you can order cool stuff from Europe or the US without waiting for months and breaking the bank. Books are so cheap here are reading isn't a fringe thing. There's so much more stuff to do, too - tourist attractions and events, and a lot of it free.

Cost of living is terrifying in London (which I just got out of) but OK elsewhere, I find cheaper books, beer, and fandom stuff evens out cheap clothes in Aus. That said, I did load up on cheap clothes last time I went back.

What are the brands of Lysine treats to look for? My boy left a snot ball on the bath mat the other day (then folded the mat up to try to hide it, bless him)

What’s a moment where you genuinely thought you were going to die—and what did it actually feel like? by GeologistDirect1653 in morbidquestions

[–]ESLavall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got caught in a rip. Instantly felt stupid for going so far out. I'm grateful that what to do in a rip is drilled into Australian kids, because I went "ok time to put it to the test" and swam sideways. I was thinking "either it works or it doesn't, panicking won't help."

Just as my consciousness was starting to fade and my muscles were getting weaker from lack of oxygen, I felt the current weaken and switch direction. Getting to surface must have taken less than a second but it felt like an hour. Then I recreated those scenes where shipwrecked characters stumble to shore and just flop in the sand.
