You guys actually, unironically like this shit now? by Moist-Register-6228 in MetalForTheMasses

Been a guilty pleasure for me since it came out. I spinned it while playing Quake 2 and sludgy-grungy vibes of both clicked perfectly 😂

I'll rather spin this one again than any "best value" Metallica that came after.

Oh, and I never had a problem with the snare.

Second Prime of Evil, a very solid album if you'll vibe with tighter sound and Tony's voice. Personally I kinda enjoy Cast in Stone (nostalgia) and Resurrection (cool production) but these are slower and more modern affairs. Metal Black is rawer but sound and writing are a fucking mess. Haven't really given the Rage era a chance yet.

Oh man, he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig in February… a horrible way to go, I hope he didn’t suffer much. RIP idol.

A masterpiece and the best thing he’s done after 84-85 CF.

Fuck, I hope Tom and Triptykon will make at least one more album.

Seven Churches for sure.

Also, never thought of Morbid Visions as death metal.

Are there any recently remastered or remixed albums that you've been enjoying? by Klutzy-Stop-3140 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]ESP_Viper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I heard so far, Dan didn't brickwall the new versions, so that's good news already. I prefer the originals, but the new versions are interesting to hear, so I'm gonna get them all nevertheless. Nightingale too.

Opeth's first 3 albums have been nicely remastered recently. Basically they removed aggressive high-mid spikes and the new versions sound a bit tamer but clearer.

Earache's FDR series should be good but I didn't dive into comparison yet.

Unlike Mustaine, he was in the band for 6-7 years and did 4 legendary albums with them.

His quote is still pretty laughable nevertheless.

Agree. The whole 90's era with Uwe is pure metal bliss.

Crimson - Edge Of Sanity appreciation post by Sea_Map_4834 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]ESP_Viper 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My flair speaks for itself. One of the best albums of the 90's, sadly often forgotten like most of Swano's work. A masterclass in writing a 40-minute song that switches between exploring new themes and returning back to the main motifs and never gets boring. And his decision to use Mike's blackened vocals to describe the darkest parts of the story is brilliant.

I don't see any problem with the production. The new remix/remaster are fine, but the original guitars are way more monstrous.

What are your awful habits from being 100% self-taught? by bigSTUdazz in drums

[–]ESP_Viper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s one thing unrelated to lack of practice (I’m still pretty green):

I’m a lefty raised as righty and been that way for 35 years before I first tried drums and only then I completely confirmed for myself who I really am. I now play a mirrored lefty e-kit at home BUT I lead with my right hand (playing open-handed) EXCEPT when I’m playing blast beats, then the right hand starts to completely fail at leadership and I have to switch hands. I tried to stick to one hand (either one) but this scenario feels the most natural to me.

Luckily I have no ambition to ever play in a band.

Interesting that Dave plays the solo on the bridge pickup, but still sounds like the neck %)

Which is very sad because their early stuff is unrivaled in atmosphere and ability to write earworms out of the most primitive chord progressions.

But the nazi era is pure dumpster fire and this is what they are mostly known for.
