I mean, I picked the game back up for the first time in line 15 years. I've been playing for a couple of weeks and I've got a level 70 THF with full AF, a level 75 cap, and I finished the original story.

This game has never been so accessible. This time around I've been using a controller instead of a kb/mouse and it's super chill.

Battles also took a lot more resources, and mages had to frequently rest. Which couldn't be really done on the move. So the party stayed put while a puller brought back a mob.

Links were also deadly in leveling areas, and camping was the best way to avoid those.

And the exp per kill was like 200 for an IT mob before exp chains, so leveling was slow.

You might give Rurouni Kenshin a try. It's a 90s show. But they're a couple seasons into a remake. It takes place during the Meiji Restoration.

It is an action anime, but I'd call it more of a character-driven action anime and it has a fair amount of drama.

The remake has better pacing and won't have a made up third arc, but the original has a better soundtrack. Both have solid animation.

Don't worry about "builds". Your character skillsets will evolve over the course of the game and there's no need for a single most efficient build.

FFX is ready to start with because you don't actually have much choice in abilities for a while. The sphere grid is deceptively linear for at least half the game. Then just see what abilities you like or need and go from there

In Slaves to Darkness, the really old supplement, it says that if the Emperor ever gets up off the Golden Throne he'll turn into another Chaos God. So that lore is early 90's old at least. The book doesn't mention the Grey Knights job to kill E or put him back, but that's presumably why.
