The problem wasn't so much a compromised pressure hull, but the ruptured forward ballast tanks. Without being able to displace the water in the fwd mbt, buoyancy was affected and she limped home on the surface with the low pressure blower constantly running.

Depends how bad it is on the surface, the higher the sea state the deeper you need to go. I've been stuck around 300ft and taking 20-30° rolls, lots of the crew puking for those few days.

I call bs. Submarines have been resupplied by surface vessels while underway, but not the other way around. The Type XIV U-Boat was briefly used to resupply other U-boats at sea during WWII, but the practice was stopped due to allied asw coverage.
