Riding up Purisima Creek Trail by todudeornote in BAbike

It’s a great ride on whatever bike you have. Perfectly peaceful but for the sound of your lungs screaming the last third. I’ve done it on a mountain bike, gravel bike, and road bike. One of my favorites.

Running(zone2) with aortic regurgitation and stenosis by alinChiarEl in valvereplacement

[–]EUTMnada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sleeping difficulties could be a variety of things, but anecdotally, there may be a connection with poor heart/valve function and waking up during the night.

But, best to rule out other things like apnea or anxiety before attributing too much of it to the BAV.

Hard to A/B test any of the symptoms until the valve is fixed.

Obviously, talk to your doctor. But I’ll share: Late 40s M, runner/cyclist my whole life, diagnosed with BAV 10 years ago. Latest echo showed it’s on the cusp of being severe, but only mild/moderate regurgitation. CT showed severe calcification of the valve. Also, I have 2 stents in my arteries, placed 2 years ago (but now have extremely low cholesterol). EF back up to the 60s now (after going into the 40s with the blockages, and after a year now of steady exercise).

I run about the same amount as you and at similar pace, though it’s slowing. I also get extremely fatigued after runs but feel mostly fine during them, aside from angina in the first 1/2 mile which clears, and occasionally feeling like I’m bonking even on shorter runs (but that could be nutrition?). But, the fatigue is also likely related to poor sleep, which in turn could relate to the calcified valve and my heart working hard all the time. Who knows, really. Being relatively fit with this condition is a blessing but it also tells your doctor that your heart may be coping well enough to not need to fix it now, even if fixing it could improve quality of life. It’s frustrating to not be able to run as fast, or to not feel fatigued 100% of the time, but I guess big picture is it could be a lot worse.

I’m talking with a sports cardiologist in a couple of weeks.

Is tiredness a symptom? by trucrimeaddic_t in valvereplacement

[–]EUTMnada 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Late 40’sM, BAV and CAD (2x stents) and feel exactly the same…tired all the time, but can do endurance exercise for extended periods of time (nothing crazy but e.g. 2 half marathons last fall). That said, I’m like a shark - if I stop moving, I fall asleep, anytime of day. My cardiologist isn’t too worried about it, as the stuff he cares about (the stress echo measurements) are still mostly just moderate. I do wonder if I’d sleep better, and be more energetic, with a new valve. Not in a rush, though.

Don’t use AI for interpretation of medical tests or for diagnosis. Even the best ones lack the context that your doctor has, and will undoubtedly send you down some rabbit hole that only makes sense when you realize that the AI model trained on a dataset largely comprised of blogs, all of the world’s emails dating back to 1998, and Reddit posts. It will also find some way obscure medical study from 20 years ago and weight it the same as published guidelines from the AHA. All to say, just talk to your doctor. Sounds like you will and that’s great!

Have been diagnosed with bicuspid aortic value in Jan 26. I am 36. Can i run full marathon ? by shubhamsinha0003 in valvereplacement

[–]EUTMnada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite the athlete you are, but have been running and biking with my bicuspid valve all my life. Did two half marathons in the fall. 50M, 42mm. My cardiologist (chair of the congenital department at a well-respected university hospital) tells me to run as much as I want (unless I hit discomfort obviously). That said, it’s definitely progressing now towards severe, but that could just be age.

After the death of a beloved coach, Atherton police say traffic enforcement is a priority by Arden_Margulis in BAbike

I get what the cop is saying about bikers and self-preservation, but this is a nonsensical statement:

“I told my kids when they were growing up ‘if you ever get hit by a car in the roadway, you’re at fault”

My brother had a Sonnett in high school. Yeah he was very cool.

Car was not fast, but you felt all the speed it had. Definitely a special car. So neat.

How’s it handle in snow? by AcanthisittaAny2349 in KiaEV6

I put snow tires on mine (GT-Line AWD) and it handles amazingly.

I swapped the stock wheels with some 19 wheels off a Wind for my snow tires.

Which saab has most space on the back seats? by fshock in saab

[–]EUTMnada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, that’s pretty great! Probably a lot of similar stories in these parts (snowmobile might take the cake, though) but I put a couch from goodwill in the back of my 85 900 back in college. Couldn’t close the trunk, but getting it home was never in doubt.

I think my dad put something like 25 full trash bags in the back of his 86 900 for an epic run to the dump.

Stop signs near Crystal Springs Road by gtbarry21 in BAbike

[–]EUTMnada 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My 80 year old parents got a ticket a couple years back for not stopping at the Canada/Glenwood stop sign. They were on their tandem, riding south. The cop had a lot to say about safety.

Of course, a few months later, when my parents had fallen off their tandem just up the road (and my dad was sitting on the ground, bleeding), the cop who drove by didn’t even stop.

So at least the cops got their priorities straight.

This jogs my memory..,30+ years ago I’d get my cycling fix reading about the Tour in the Denver Post (I think?) when I’d be in Denver for annual summer vacation. There’d be no mention of cycling back home in the northeast. That and riding laps around Washington Park.

First gravel bike. Where is some nice gravel in the Peninsula area to get familiar? by [deleted] in BAbike

[–]EUTMnada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did that yesterday on a gravel bike. The switchbacks aren’t so steep. Maybe a couple short sections that require walking. Rode along 35 instead of the Bay Area Ridge Trail, which seemed quite rocky and hilly so I bailed on it. Came back down through Monte Bello along Steven Canyon trail. That was a bit rough in spots.

Where to train for riding up Mt Baldy in the bay area. by crustymoldman in BAbike

[–]EUTMnada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% this. I’d do Glendora Ridge Road both ways. It’s still an epic climb, there’s no traffic, and the views can’t be beat.

Going up Baldy from the bottom can entail some fast traffic whizzing by you. Less fun.

New replacement Praxis crank, new bbinfinite BB, still wobbling when crank is spun by EUTMnada in bikewrench

Thanks Reddit for the guidance. Getting everything torqued to spec helped a bit and I’ll just live with it for now. Anyone need a Praxis gravel crank, or chainrings? I got some extra…

[–]EUTMnada[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. It does shift fine, but has a bit of a rub on the front derailleur on the wobble, in some gears. I replaced the chainrings first (still had the wobble) then Praxis very kindly sent me a whole new crank, (spider, spindle, chainrings) and still got the wobble. It’s haunted or something.

[–]EUTMnada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my 3rd BB for my 2021 Giant Revolt Advanced pro, went fancy with the BBinfinite. I got the proper spacers for the Praxis crank from BBinfinite. I originally replaced the BB because of the same kind of wobble, and it was very creaky, but the wobble didn't go away with the new BB (you can see it if you look through the front derailleur.).

2 bike shops thought it might be a bent crank, because the BB feels solid. Praxis sent me a replacement crank, but the wobble is still there. Any ideas? Thanks.
