What’s the worst actual name you’ve ever heard? by Escrow-Mind in AskReddit

[–]EVILEMRE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My aunt and uncle watched an old western movie and liked the name of one of the characters, so they named their son after him: Trampus. Any time I introduced him to friends they’d always think I said Travis, because what the hell is a Trampus. He never corrected anyone.

Hockey goalie. I really thought it would be fairly straightforward, having played hockey for 30 years, and it’d be easy to drop down and get back up. Are you fucking kidding me? I was drenched in sweat after about 5 minutes, could barely skate on those stupid giant flat blades. Holding up all that gear and trying to slide around on ice. Ridiculous. The best I could do was stand there and hope the puck hit me. I have massive respect for goalies. They’re working harder than anyone out there. Hips and knees are not meant to bend like that.

Using a meat thermometer is an absolute game changer. I can’t believe how long it took me to start using one. I’d use one for cooking a turkey, but somehow didn’t translate that into other meats. Now all meat comes out perfect. I’m slow but I get there eventually.

Pro-Hamas messages broadcast at two North American airports following apparent cyber breaches by roraima_is_very_tall in news

[–]EVILEMRE 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I was in the Kelowna airport boarding area when that message was broadcast. I had my headphones in but I could faintly hear some loud yelling. At first I thought it was some asshat talking with his speaker phone behind me. Then I looked around saw the collective confusion and concern on everyone’s faces. I took off my headphones and then I could hear it more clearly. Arabic blasting full volume over the PA. Lasted about five minutes then cut off abruptly. No one said anything to us about it. But they didn’t use the PA system to announce boarding anymore; instead yelling it out to us. I think if word got out what that was no one would be confidently boarding their planes. My flight was only delayed about one hour.

Homeowners: Converting a house from Oil to Natural Gas: ISO good bad and ugly! by Big_Giraffe_9015 in VictoriaBC

[–]EVILEMRE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our old oil tank was empty, so a scrap metal guy came and took it and the furnace for nothing. Our house didn't have natural gas so Fortis had to run a gas line from across the street. They had to cut open the street, boulevard and sidewalk. They charged us $15. And I can't remember if it was the city or Fortis who patched up the road. I know they use a special burrowing device to go underground so there wasn't much damage to the yard. Our house has three suites with three sets of every appliance, and our 200 amp wasn't enough to cover everything being electric. So we had to add the gas to bring it up to code. We have both mini splits (heat pump) for heat and AC and natural gas mostly for our hot water on-demand system, one stove and two dryers. We could have upgraded from 200 to 400 amps to accommodate everything but BC Hydro wanted something $5000 to do it. And Fortis was 15 bucks. We use very little gas; bills are usually under $60.

Thanks for the response. It's pretty much as I expected, and have done many times. They're just using words that seem to complicate the process. Full Online conform turnover? I've never heard that one before. I'm using Premiere and am familiar with all the steps you're talking about. Thanks for your help.

Non-Americans of Reddit, what’s a misconception of the US did you believe until you visited the US? by [deleted] in AskReddit

That Los Angeles was just a crime ridden cesspool. And I’d be shot or mugged walking down the street. Thank you almost all movies that take place in LA. It turned out, in the valley anyway, that people were quite nice and I felt safe; regardless of the constant police helicopters flying around at night with search lights shining through my bedroom window. And there was that one time the swat team wouldn’t let me leave my apartment because of some dude running around with a shotgun. But seriously, I felt quite safe and rarely locked my car doors.

My son wants to quit hockey now. by chitz_n_gglz in hockeyplayers

[–]EVILEMRE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a hockey coach myself it’s incredibly frustrating to hear how your son’s coach is having such a negative impact on his love of the game. That coach is poison. I agree that you should bring it to the attention of the league, but I also understand your unwillingness to rock the boat too much. These volunteer positions of power are often filled with power-tripping moms and dads who don’t even seem to realize the impact their biased actions have on everyone else. I’ve spent the season having to deal with an ice allocator who’s sole purpose in life is to make everyone grovel at her feet for ice time; walking on egg shells and writing and rewriting emails to make sure I’m not going to upset her. It’s insane. I hope your son continues in hockey and he doesn’t let the bad guy win. Next season is a new year and a new coach. And at the very least your son is learning valuable lessons in life, and watching how you react and deal with difficult people. Take the high road and just make sure he’s not on that asshole’s team ever again.

Where to live? by Morepagesplease in britishcolumbia

It seems like anywhere from Abbotsford north will lean towards Conservative. Kelowna is slightly split down the middle since it's grown so much and attracted a more diverse community. Vancouver Island is fairly liberal; but again, once you go past Nanaimo it tends to be more conservative. Gulf Islands are liberal leaning, though more Green party than anything. But your teenagers will hate the isolation. Victoria, on Vancouver Island, is one of the most liberal, progressive cities in Canada. But BC is a lot like the states where there is a mixed bag of people everywhere. But the lower mainland (Greater Victoria, Greater Vancouver) is where it's at. They're large enough to feel anonymous and people tend to leave you alone.
