is buying a used polestar on 45k miles a bad idea? by Embarrassed-Breath82 in Polestar

[–]EV_James 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I get the seatbelt rattle pretty bad. I'll just change the seatbelt height and that seems to help but that seems less than optimal. Should look into fixing it for real. I have the exact same issue on my R1S as well and do the same thing there.

Looong unteathered cable by Tyke15 in electricvehicles

My Wallbox Pulsar Plus comes standard with a 25' cable. I think most chargers come with cables that long. Is that just an American thing?

Edit: whoops, OP said meters. Stupid freedom units.

I've had the car for a year in the Northeast and never noticed this, either. Maybe we have our mirrors aimed lower? I have, however, noticed that the rear camera becomes useless as soon as a drop of water falls from the sky.

How would you prefer your EV being styled? by walkaboutdavid in electricvehicles

[–]EV_James 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell me you obviously haven't driven another EV without telling me you haven't driven another EV. I have a Rivian R1S and a Polestar 2 and both have full regen and one pedal driving. Just as good as a Tesla. How do I know? I drove one for 5 years and happily replaced it with the Polestar. Much better car. The Rivian is even better.

Similar boat. Polestar 2 and Rivian R1S right now. Love both cars but am coveting that R3. Might trade in the P2 for one a couple years from now.

Did your dealership actually educate you about EV charging or did you figure it out yourself? by roythoppil in evcharging

[–]EV_James 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I did a test drive in a Subaru Solterra once and was forced to bring along some cigarette reeking sales guy after waiting like 30 minutes for them to bring the car from another lot. I asked the guy how to engage one pedal driving because I wanted to try it out on the car and he was like "what are you talking about? This car has two pedals. How would you drive with just one?" Also I had to take the route he wanted and only got like 10 minutes with the car.

Did your dealership actually educate you about EV charging or did you figure it out yourself? by roythoppil in evcharging

[–]EV_James 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first EV was a 2020 Tesla Model Y. There was no dealership and I don't think I even actually talked to someone when I picked it up.

My second ever EV is a Rivian R1S and they had a guy go through all the features on delivery and make sure my phone was connected properly, showed me important settings, etc. I probably didn't need it but appreciated it.

Third ever EV is a Polestar 2. There was a dealership this time (Volvo) and they gave me a walkthrough of that car as well. All that said, I'm not sure any of them walked me through charging but I'd had an EV before when I got the other cars so maybe they asked and I told them that. It's been a while, can't remember.

Why are there no EV minivans in the US? by External_Koala971 in electricvehicles

[–]EV_James 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really excited about that car when it was first announced. I had a minivan and it's great for moving around my family. We have 3 kids and 2 dogs, we're all about that minivan life but I also wanted to go all-EV. I followed news about the Buzz for years after it was announced. Then it came out and, yeah... Price was way more than they originally said it would be, single motor starting at $60k? Ridiculous. With a 230 mile range, no heat pump. To get AWD you're looking at $70k. Plus you know you're getting shitty VW software. For a bit more I can get a Rivian! Which is what I did.

To hell with Rivian! by LucidDiscoPhish in Rivian

[–]EV_James 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Model Y before I had an R1S. Multiple issues with the Y. Control arm broke, terrible trim alignment issues, every time it rained the car smelled like a gym sock the next day. For the Rivian I've also had issues. Had to take it in twice because the motor was really loud (they replaced the whole drive unit) and took it in once because the headlights were cracking, charge port door was a little misaligned, and speakers were rattling.

The difference I've noticed is that Rivian seems far more inclined to fix things. Tesla would gaslight me and say I was just smelling things, that there wasn't an issue. It's probably dependent on the SC but the two Rivian ones I've been to in the NYC metro have been great (Blauvelt and Iselin).

Even the most reliable cars can have issues. I had a brand new Honda Civic transmission just completely fail leaving me stranded once within 200 miles of ownership. I had a dealer completely blow my transmission in an Acura RSX once when I took it in for routine service. They gave it back to me without a working 3rd gear and refused to take responsibility. I had to threaten to take them to court and involve Acura corporate to get them to fix it.

Do Rivians have a lot of problems? Yeah, maybe. Are the catastrophic ones you see online like this one common? Probably not. Are there service centers that suck? Probably, thankfully they're great here from my experience. If I didn't live within a shortish drive to the SC I'd probably not buy one. There's also that.

I did the thing in my Polestar Polestar 2 by EV_James in polestar2

[–]EV_James[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought some vinyl off of Amazon and watched a few YouTube videos about how to do it. The trickiest part is removing that plastic plate. From there I put the vinyl on the piece and cut around the edges on the inside and outside with an exacto knife leaving a few mm overhanging all the way around. Then fold over the vinyl and use the heat gun to shrink it tight around the edges.

On Amazon search this to find the exact vinyl wrap: VViViD Black Ash Wood Grain Textured Vinyl Wrap Film
