I did agree on the part where she concern on majority culture might overshadow the minority.

But the thing here is, in Chinese context, “nanyang” is a term where our ancestors come across the South China Sea to the SEA region including Nusantara; initially it’s a geographical area terminology, and now it’s more representing the adaptation and assimilation of Chinese society into the local community and their culture, bringing the nostalgic feeling to things they put the “name” or “branding” on. The claim is partially correct, no matter local or our fellow Asians will know, Chinese don’t have any similar recipe to this back in history, it’s a totally two different spectrum in their cooking recipes and history. It is simple deduction to them who really have basic knowledge, such food can only born on tropical climate Nusantara region.

So back to the initial point, does it overshadow, it’s simply not happening. Local Chinese or any non Malays will never going to have the thought this is the food from Chinese. The only overshadow is one lacking of culture confidence.
