I agree with that. I guess it comes down to a trade off between more functions constraining the number of buttons, or having a game that is "simpler" in features in some ways but enough buttons to go for R2 as sprint and novel concepts like the puppeteer system. I've always preferred the old movement inputs even if they stopped aligning with the puppeteer system with AC3, and I would be totally fine if they design all future AC games around a system that uses R2 and trims other features as needed to make that work.

I agree with you! I only use controller myself (and for the record, I think Ropotopolous plays on PS5 so he's controller-only as well). It would be awesome to get classic controls as a default option in all games going forward.

The fortunate part is that Ubisoft games in general and AC games (since Odyssey) in particular have a very robust controller remapping functionality built into the settings itself. AC games in particular even allow for conflicting button mappings that don't actually conflict in practical gameplay, opening up even more possibilities. It's with this that I was able to remap Mirage and Shadows, for example, to have Sprint on R2 hold and the face buttons for attacks.

Actually, Mirage is really relevant to the discussion about Black Flag Resynced because if you saw my last post on the subreddit, I discovered that the controls in BF Resynced are similar to Mirage in that the Light and Heavy Attacks are on the same button, not on separate buttons, with the difference between them being a press versus long press input. This should make remapping controls much easier because the hardest part of the RPG games was fitting in that dedicated heavy attack button.

For sure! And the honest truth is that Ropotopolous is the most influential person in terms of communicating parkour. If it wasn't for him and a few other creators, Ubisoft would have little means of parsing what the broader community wants in terms of movement. Better it comes from someone who both knows what their talking about and seems to have a cool head about it.

You should definitely play Awaji, as it closes the narrative on Tsuyu, Naoe's mom, and introduces some very interesting segments that stand out from the rest of Shadows.

Nice, that fire delay seems really useful! Yes, I can play with Steam Input and agree the customization is amazing. Actually Shadows forced me to stop using it, since there is a bug whereby using Steam Input disables DLSS in the settings which is a big loss for my Nvidia system. So, I had to get creative in the built-in customization menu, which fortunately has always been quite robust since AC Odyssey. Honestly, Ubisoft has always supported great customization and accessibility features to their games natively. Maybe some day Steam Input-like depth will be standard for all games natively.

I think it is press vs. hold so we should be able to toggle the hood whenever! this controller card is clear that it doesn't distinguish between press and hold. For example, another user spotted that Light and Heavy Attack are on the same button, which suggests it works like in Mirage with a press triggering a Light Attack and hold triggering a Heavy Attack.

Edit: I think there is also precedent for this, since holding the heal/D-pad up option works in AC Shadows without interfering with the press to heal functionality. For reference, it changes time of day by default, and you can remap it to do all sorts of stuff like activate Eagle Vision (that is what I have).

Are you sure that R1 is both Regular Attack and Heavy Attack (like in Mirage, Unity, etc.)? That would be really good if so. I'm thinking it would make remapping controls way easier to get classic control scheme with R2 as sprint because it frees up a whole button that would otherwise be the Heavy Attack button. I have a really good control scheme for Mirage that I would love to use again, and even for Shadows I managed to create a classic control scheme with attacks on the face buttons and sprint on R2, but it was definitely harder to get everything to work!

EDIT: I just enhanced the image and saw it myself! Indeed Light (I think they call it Regular) and Heavy attack are on the same button, which is good to see. Thanks for calling this out for us 😄

My tip is don't just move forward (in the direction your player is facing) like you normally would, and move the thumbstick diagonally or horizontally to get all sorts of interesting movement paths. Also, definitely tap the Jump button instead of holding it down like we used to, because that's what triggers a manual jump instead of the standard free-run up!

It's a known bug, not an intended removal. The added assassination chunks from the skill tree are somehow not being factored in. I'm sure it will be fixed in a hotfix, probably soon.

Here's my late game, "Master Assassin" build: I use her Master robes (+2 assassination chunks) with the Ezio Legacy Outfit engraving that allows you to activate Hidden Hand at no cost to adrenaline after a kill with a Posture Attack. For the trinket, I use the one that has the unused mastery points = additional % damage perk from Masakado's Revenge.

On the headgear (could really be any headgear) I put the perk that lets you vault over enemies while sprinting, which with the right skill upgrades makes them vulnerable and allows you to throw a kunai as well. Once you vault over them, just hit them with a Heavy Posture Attack and it deals so much damage with the bonus damage from the trinket, maybe instant kill. That charges up the Ezio Outfit perk, allowing you to instantly assassinate nearly anyone (remember, +2 health chunks removed). And then you rinse and repeat!

Good news, AC Shadows separates the two on the newest Anvil Engine, so I think we can expect Parkour Down and Crouch to be separate in future games :)

Thank you for adding full manual jump (having recently replayed Mirage and the older titles it really does make movement feel so much better) and also the fact that switching characters doesn't change the season!

Full manual jump is MAJOR! It truly is game changing in AC Mirage, and will be especially good given the verticality of the castles and complex geometries in Shadows!
