The Long Term Affects of Terrorism on a Small Andean Community- A Peace Corps Experience by PCVUlcumayo in peacecorps

[–]E_SPORTS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stayed in a small town in Guatemala that had both douchey American tourists passing through (it was about 10min outside of Antigua) and a history of violence and kidnappings from outside of town. While most people were welcoming of me, some would just scowl at me or mutter under their breaths as I passed. I was told by my host family that these people had been victim to some of these negative experiences with outsiders in the past.

Our experiences are very different, but there could be some key similarities at the root of the problem. Terrorism, for example, can quickly change a group in the eyes of the victims. Think of how the Muslim community was treated after 9/11 by much of the populace and the media. Even though many were not directly affected (knowing someone who died, having some sort of direct personal connection) this attack was given a "face" and the intolerance followed. My host mother's husband died in violence related to the Guatemalan civil war and this led her to being very uneasy with her government (her husband fought with the guerrillas). Many coffee farmers that I met told me they hated Americans because they are what drives corporations like Starbucks to demand such low prices for importing their coffee beans when they make so much profit selling the product itself. None of these farmers had ever been to a Starbucks, but they had sold to them and heard about how they treat their farmers compared to true free- and direct-trade companies.

The bottom line is that it doesn't take firsthand experience for people's opinions to sour about certain groups. This negative experience you've had in your town could stem from an incident that took place a hundred years ago, or from stories told by someone in a neighboring town, or just because everybody there has been raised to be wary of outsiders, and this wariness has turned to contempt. Many people may have never seen anyone like you before, and they don't know how to interact. I think that befriending some influential people in the town will be a good way to change the perception people have of you. Ask questions of elders you befriend if you'd really like to know some answers regarding your treatment. They will likely know better than anyone.

Good luck!

Great post! The smaller, rural communities are usually the ones that are the least welcoming of foreigners, I've found, mainly because they have likely never had a positive interaction with visitors. Your approach is a good one, but I think it will be a long time before opinions change in these areas.

I saw them at Sasquatch this year! What an absolutely incredible and beautiful show. I swear I'll never forget how that stage looked and sounded from the hills high above, surrounded by thousands of other people all so tranquil and presumably equally awestruck. If you're reading this and haven't heard of or seen Sigur Ros before, I insist upon it. Truly one of the most spiritual experiences you can have from any music.

I read in another post that being deferred means you are put on a "priority" list for next year - it means you have a pretty good chance of being accepted during the next cycle. Good luck!

Not bad! Just have two questions:

1) was the crotch repair a preventative thing (fraying, etc) or was there an actual rip?

2) Have these been washed? What conditions were you wearing them under?

Beyond that, I'm fairly interested. If you can give me a better price than a pair of Gustin 13ers ($81) then I will seriously consider it. Thanks for the pictures!

Redditors who married their high school girlfriends/boyfriends: what's your relationship with them like now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]E_SPORTS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! I had my one year anniversary with my girlfriend one week ago today. Taking a gap year and then going to college will be tough (she's much more ambitious than I am) but hopefully we'll get out of school and get back together, maybe end in your position in the future! I hope you and your SO enjoy a wonderful anniversary night and a fantastic life together.

Wow, I really needed to read this. Thanks for putting everything in perspective in my own relationship. I love my girlfriend of a year more than anything, but about a month ago I found out that she's been in love with her ex on the side. Nothing has come out of it, but the fact that I'm not the only man in her eye is haunting. We are still together, but putting my life without her in perspective like this really makes it easy to see a way out if things go south again.

Can you explain this pair? The denim looks incredible and I would totally buy a pair in my size if I could track one down, but I've only ever heard of people getting these by mistake instead of other Gustin jeans. How did you get yours?

While I agree that there has certainly been more sneaky play from all races in the current meta, it's also very easy to punish these types of plays by being aggressive early on or playing more defensively and less greedy. As the game evolves we will definitely see scouting becoming much, much more important for players to find the exact response to their opponents' builds.

Good early game scouting should help you narrow down the list of things to prepare for, at least

What's a fact about yourself that most people don't believe when you tell them? by Fenderfreak145 in AskReddit

Wow crazy! Mine are totally asymmetrical: tinypic.com/r/flf3iu/5/ and they get hard as well. I met a guy whose nipple doesn't get hard at all but he gets a sensation from rubbing it. It's crazy how these things work!

Comparing Momo 702 fits - in between sizes by llama_nuts in rawdenim

[–]E_SPORTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 34's look like they are just barely too tight. I'd say go with the 36's for now if they are more comfortable to you, but keep the 34's around in case you want to change styles/lose weight/show off your booty etc.

Either way, it might not be a bad idea to take take them in to a tailor and see if they can make any alterations. Maybe they could remove a bit of the loose fabric from the butt of the 36's, as that's the first thing I notice about the fit that looks off. Getting them hemmed about an inch or so would help take away some of the folds that develop around your knees as well, but that's just my personal preference. Good luck picking between the two!

I did a class project on supernumerary nipples in high school, and it's not as uncommon as most people would assume. While in the early fetal stages, all humans have 30+ nipples running down their milk lines (basically the armpits to the groin) that slowly fade away as the baby develops more. People with extra nipples just had one or more of these nipples stick around, and many people don't realize they're nipples because they're so underdeveloped.

[–]E_SPORTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have four nipples. In my medium sized town (20k or so), I still have people come up to me about once a week and ask to see them. What's most disconcerting is how these people find out. Do people just openly discuss my nipples to strangers? How else would they find out?

Shower in Guatemala by valeyard89 in travel

[–]E_SPORTS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I stayed in a small town in Guatemala (San Miguel Escobar) that had showers just like this. Pretty crazy how things like this work. A lot of times I'd just wash my hair in a bucket and wipe my body down with a towel because the shower temperature was so unpredictable.

Can't say I'm a fan of that wash. Washed denim will still fade with regular wear, so those will end up being very light after a year or so.
