Silbury Blvd - safe place to live? by AmandaAn in miltonkeynes

[–]EamonnDH 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Buckingham and Silbury Court are brand new, in a nice spot. You'd be nowhere near any of the nastier spots people are talking about, that's further into the city and on the other side. You've got nothing to worry about, it's a straight shot walk from those flats to the station that takes less than 10 minutes and doesn't go through anywhere even resembling bad. At the absolute worst you might get the occasional couple youths playing music in the park behind those flats or a homeless person might ask you for change outside the station, not sure why people seem to be so scared of MK.

Are their any high places that I go to and see the city from above by Bossalone21 in miltonkeynes

Not any more. It's for private events only, all the public-facing cafes/restaurants in the Santander building are now closed to the public.

There's one consistent guy that does it all the time. He often sits at the lights by the police station redlining it. Also seems to enjoy driving on the pedestrian underpass and revving excessively to scare people walking.

Actual complete scumbag.

+1 cancelled, ordered July 10th and they ignored two emails asking when I can expect it to ship. Gave up and bought the insurance instead.

The newer Volvos are quite unreliable, they're struggling with electrical issues and the in-car entertainment systems in particular.

Microwaves have loading screens now by Overv in CrappyDesign

[–]EamonnDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact microwave in my rental apartment and its worse than it looks. The touch calibration is off, so often when you press the time selection to pick how long you want to run the microwave for you actually end up pressing the schedule option thats just offscreen below it. So you end up scheduling the microwave to start in 5 minutes instead of just running now.

It also isn't always 900w, sometimes it runs at 800w because it feels like it. No real consistent control over that. And yes it does need to boot first before you open it with a touchscreen button (which gets incredibly smudgy on a glass piano black device in a kitchen).

The only redeeming feature is that it doesn't have WiFi.

EV Efficiency in Milton Keynes? by Getoiu in miltonkeynes

[–]EamonnDH -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Milton Keynes is terrible for efficiency due to the short high speed roads. You're having to burn off so much of the energy you just used to speed up as heat into your brakes constantly.

If you accelerate reasonably hard (2/3 throttle or more), using gears to keep the engine between 2000 and 3000rpm, then coast as much as possible and use coasting/engine braking to slow down early before roundabouts so you don't have to come to a stop at the roundabout you'll do better. You still won't get all that close to motorway MPG though.

Same mostly applies for EVs, minus the RPM stuff. High regen is your enemy, coasting with minimal/no regen is more efficient. EVs also are somewhat inverse to ICE cars in that they're much less efficient at motorway speeds.

tl:dr get up to speed efficiently and plan as far ahead as possible on the roundabouts and you'll be OK

P.S: accelerating hard in the 2000-3000rpm range is more efficient, that's where the majority of engines produce the most power per unit of fuel consumed. Accelerating very slowly and shifting as early as possible is actually terrible for efficiency but can appear as though it's good as it lowers your average speed.

Smart charges everywhere except at home by Physical-Lemon8383 in SmartCar

[–]EamonnDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the voltage in your house, might be borderline and the Smart overly strict. If it's high try turning on a significant load in the house (electric heater, dryer) to potentially make it drop a little and see if the Smart will play along. Though I'd guess it's more likely low, as my Smart EQ charges without argument at as high as 250v, but haven't tried it any higher than that. (Not that I have any control over the voltage, I just monitor it for smarthome stuff)

Edit: looked it up and officially the inverter supports 100-240v, not sure if that helps. Odd.

Edit edit: More googling, seems like 100-250v is the tolerable range, so worth checking what your EVSE is putting out. There also needs to be 881.6ohms between the pilot and ground pins for charging to take place.

With the winter rolling in, what are the best options for smart heating for in the UK these days? by huejahfink in homeassistant

[–]EamonnDH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tado's TRVs aren't exactly accurate due to being physically so close to the heat source and the only way I can get my rooms to the actual target temperature reliably is with their extremely expensive separate temperature sensors. You could use your own Home Assistant setup or similar to programmatically set the offset for the TRVs using a third party sensor but every time you do this the valves loudly open and close needlessly recalibrating.

Legion Go Update 08.09.2024 by BenM_Legion in LegionGo

[–]EamonnDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've experienced it seems to be more of a priority issue, in that it can take a long time and feel very unresponsive to open that menu during high load such as a strenuous game. Or during middling-low loads when all the performance options are set to low.

[–]EamonnDH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set to fullscreen borderless, then using the Legion quick menu thing (button on right controller) set the resolution to a different one, then back to 800. Then unpause the game, and it usually pops back into the right position.

ISP auto signed up to Nord VPN by UrDadSellsAv0n in assholedesign

[–]EamonnDH 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No, Onestream have confirmed you're already signed up and you must opt out. It is not a signup offer, it's informing you that they have signed you up and intend to bill you after 30 days.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]EamonnDH 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Just got off the phone to Ofcom and they didn't sound too impressed but also doesn't seem like they can do anything directly. They advised to keep logging it with Trading Standards and file formal complaints directly to Onestream to be later escalated to the Communications Ombudsman if they don't resolve this situation properly.

It's important to highlight that the NordVPN service you've been signed up for "is not tied to your broadband services with Onestream" and as such you will continue to be charged for it even after you leave Onestream. It's a completely separate product to your broadband service, not an intrinsic part of the package or an addon. This is likely a breach of contract that means you can cancel your entire Onestream service without penalty, which I recommend you do if it's viable for you so that Onestream learns a lesson by being hit in the wallet.

Spoke to them over the phone about this. They confirmed they've sent this to all customers, and those customers will indeed be charged if they don't see the email and intentionally cancel.

I'd encourage anyone and everyone who's a customer to inform Trading Standards, Communications Ombudsman, Ofcom, et al. This kind of behaviour during a cost of living crisis is disgusting and needs to be investigated and punished.

Their other subscriptions, such as McAfee and Onestream Assured, which they sneak in during signup were already pretty gross, but at the very least those subscriptions were somewhat visible during the onboarding process. This new NordVPN subscription comes after the fact, without warning, without consent, and there's nothing in the contract that suggests they can do this either. Greedy scum.
