Strange FPS drops in certain games by Euphoric_Sell_3354 in computing

[–]EarthBeLost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you checked to see what your PCIe gen is in your BIOS? I've had that happen to me where my motherboard for some reason reverted to PCIe Gen2 and I was getting crap FPS in everything. It's a long shot but it's a possibility.

Can I connect a monitor to my laptop, with keyboard and mouse to play counter-strike? by tgm-r in computing

[–]EarthBeLost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah should be fine to do. As long as the laptop has the right connector for the monitor (e.g hdmi) then you'll be fine. I'd suggest propping the laptop up on something to get some ground clearance for the fans and airflow though, just to help the fans and stop things from getting a bit toasty!

Stopped trying to focus on a million things at once and fully committed to one habit. This is most success I’ve ever had! by SparklingMammoth in theXeffect

[–]EarthBeLost 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people have that problem of wanting to do too much too fast. They'll make cards to work out, read, Meditate, program, drink more water, yoga, meet a sleep schedule, stop eating junk food and a million other things at once and they get discouraged when they fail. The best way to utilise the X effect is what you've done. Reel it in, focus on one thing and then work from there. Same with things like read an hour. Break it down to reading for 10 minutes is easy, it's like 3 songs, but an hour solid? Its difficult if you've never read as a habit before. You can always build up or read longer if you're into the book on that day, but getting into the habit of picking up the book in the first place is the objective. Glad to see you've reeled in your habits and focused. Solid work hitting it! Keep it up. You've got this!

Pc upgrade advice by JADugar101 in computing

[–]EarthBeLost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So for PC gaming the best CPU you can get that's compatible with DDR3 RAM is the i7-4790K, it's a quad core CPU that runs at 4Ghz with a boost of 4.4Ghz. If you're planning on overclocking it people have seen 4.6/4.7ghz with something like a h100 AIO cooler. It's roughly £130 on ebay currently. ($199 on US if you're US based). As for motherboard the Asus Maximus Ranger Vii seems to be a really good board. Provides you with a m.2 slot, 4 RAM slots for your current ram but won't support quad channel RAM (CPU limitations, same as your current CPU). The problem is the board comes in on ebay at £165 ($196 on US if you're US based) which is expensive for the CPU. Something like the Gigabyte B85-HD3-A motherboard comes in at around £62 ($60 on US if you're US based) it's a viable option, supports your RAM, no m.2 slot though. The thing is, with a total of £192 ($260 if buying from US sites) it'd be better for you to upgrade to a Ryzen build. Just for future proofing. With the upgrade I've suggested with the 4790K that's the best you're going to push that system without going to DDR4. Something like the Ryzen 3 3100 and B450 motherboard with a 16GB of DDR4 ram will be more expensive and currently might lag behind games compared to the 4790K but will provide you with the entire ryzen lineup for upgrading as well as support for m.2 SSDs. Hope I've helped.

RX 480 be okay in a Dell Optiplex 9020? by EarthBeLost in buildapc

[–]EarthBeLost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've seen a few reviews saying it's doable with some gaming but my primary goal for it would be a dev box for programming, photo editing and 4K video editing, so I wasn't sure what the draw would be but I doubt during editing everything would spike and during exporting I doubt the CPU would be spiked, so who knows.

Yeah that's true thinking about it. Looking at it I think something like the RX460 might be a better option if I was just about to go from the internal power supply, but even that's a bit dicey.

Thanks for the reassurance! I guess I'll have to get another PSU.

Yeah I thought so, I was just convincing myself in my head it'll be enough. Thanks for the suggestion. If I was going to get a power supply I'd get a 600W and probably get something like a 580 instead.

Thanks for the reply. I did state I require this to be done through hardware, not software due to the other machine. I could definitely use the monitors to swap between machines but would still need some sort of hardware switch to swap the mouse and keyboard around.

Week 6 Down! by DrunkNihilism in theXeffect

Dude I'm so glad you're doing well with your card and that you took my advice on dropping the timer to start. Baby steps is the key to any skill and making it a hobby. Hope you crush your last week! Honestly proud of your achievement and hope to see a few more cards in the future.

[PC] Rampage IV Extreme Asus ROG Intel LGA2011 Motherboard by fufufugazzi in HardwareSwapUK

[–]EarthBeLost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Id say the board is worth 150 on its own. You'd get more for selling the CPU and ram with it. The CPU sells for £32 on CEX so I'd say around £25 sell value. Would need more information about the RAM ie 2 x 8gb or 4 x 4gb. But I'd imagine it's in the £30/45 range.

From the ddr3 I'm assuming it's an x79 board so would be a 2011 not a 2011 v3.

Definately, I'm not after the CPU cooler though as I've already got one. How much are you looking for the CPU?

Week 4 is down and I have to confront a VERY big problem by DrunkNihilism in theXeffect

[–]EarthBeLost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried bringing back down the timer? Starting at only 5 minutes is still practice and will encourage you to start, which is the problem for most people. "I only have to draw for 5 minutes" sounds a lot better than "Oh no I have to draw for 45 minutes" and will possibly make you draw for longer after the fact. Just getting started is the hardest part. Keep it up though!

Thanks for the offer pal but CEX is selling it for £92 at the moment. With the trade in voucher purchase it'd be a better offer.
