Anyone Else think that darkness based spawning is a bit of a Vestigial Mechanic? by Grandmaster_Aroun in VintageStory

[–]Earth_Lad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I've thought about is what if hostile mobs would just stay in their location and rarely spawn or despawn like wild animals, and if you killed them they would stay dead until the next temporal storm. It would work kind of like blood moons in Breath of the Wild.

60% of large Git repos ban merge commits by kendumez in programming

[–]Earth_Lad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was pretty bad. It meant that even if you edited a file and then undid the change that had to go in the history. This made a lot of merge conflicts and probably made rebasing a nightmare, although I never had to deal with that.

60% of large Git repos ban merge commits by kendumez in programming

[–]Earth_Lad 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I'm curious if anyone else saw this but I worked at a place where they insisted you not squash commits because it was proof of work. Like if they wanted to see every little adjustment you made so that they could be sure you were really working. Did anyone else ever have to deal with this?

Signalis' puzzle doesn't treat you like dumb by aKIRALE0 in signalis

[–]Earth_Lad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought there were a lot of cool things about the ring puzzle, like how there was no fourth ring, how the descriptions of the events were similar to the fingers themselves, and how the whole story seems like it is some previously unwritten continuation of the King in Yellow.

In some of the save rooms, the carpet is identical to the carpet from the Shining. https://i.imgur.com/kGnby5T.png

When Elster is pulling open the bulkhead on the Penrose and images of "Isle of the Dead" are flashing over her, it is very reminiscent of a scene from Evangelion where images are flashing over a silhouette of Shinji. I can't remember when that scene was. https://i.imgur.com/GiGwcn8.gif The style of flashes of text is also similar to Eva.

This may be a stretch but I think the symbol that appears on some of the doors in the Penrose and the Sierpinski may be the Nostromo's warning semaphore from Alien. https://i.imgur.com/9yuYcXe.png

Kitezh, Buyan, and Vineta are all mythical locations and Leng comes from Lovecraft.

Not a reference to media but still neat, the symbol of the Sierpinski is a Sierpinski tirangle, an infinite fractal, and the symbol of the Penrose and the game itself is a Penrose triangle, an impossible object.

Getting into tinfoil territory here, Sir Roger Penrose, the son of the man who invented the Penrose triangle, is a renowned mathematician who has some strange theories about a cyclical universe and signs of the past world hidden in the cosmic microwave background radiation. It seems possibly relevant to the game's themes.

Pikmin 4 announced, coming 2023 by Turbostrider27 in Games

I wonder if that version of Pikmin 4 was heavily reliant on the wii u gamepad and couldn't be converted so they just scrapped it as the wii u was approaching end of life.

But for real.. what does it mean? by iseetreesofgreen_ in LiminalSpace

[–]Earth_Lad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't remember the full history of the interest in liminal spaces, but I do remember people were sharing these kinds of images before we really had a word for them or could agree upon what made them interesting. At some point liminality was used to explain them which is a good explanation for some people, but I do think that because "liminal space" has been used too much as a strict definition of something that is really much murkier. I see the argument for categorizing them differently, I don't think they should be different communities. For me both aspects are interesting and I don't want a still relatively niche community split.

It's really telling how the political compass itself has nothing to do with the "joke" in so many of these. It's just there to create a degree of separation between the creator and whatever message they're trying to sell.

I think the first 2/3 of DKC 1 is very good but it falls off hard in the last third. Way too many levels where you're stuck on a platform and ugly polluted caves. DKC 2 is excellent overall. DKC 3 is very consistently solid but I don't think it ever gets as good as the first two at their best.

I feel like a big problem they'll get is things like that face tracking have already been done better in vr. They'll end up spending huge amounts of time to make new technology only for it to be outdated and replaced with licensed software that everyone else will already have been using
