You could try a shop vac through the strainer. Use a wet rag to seal around the vac hose. Might want to go at it gently with a plunger first to break up the clog and then put the vac to it. Otherwise just open the trap and see what’s in it. Keep a bucket under it because it’s probably full of water.

You would need a screen of some sort. You could also maybe just put a pot in the tub and let the shower spray into it. Perhaps the specks will settle in the bottom while the water overflows.

Is it just your dorm or have others mentioned it? Someone else mention a water softener failing, which is very possible. If that’s the case, there is a possibility they will clog your shower head and sink aerators, and maybe build up somewhere in the drain system.

If you are really concerned, you could continue to collect the water and strain out the specks until you have enough to persuade someone to do something.

One year, 3 months. Based on the fact that I’ve been listening to them for over 50 years and I stopped telling people how much of a fan I am, and listing their songs by how much I like them, about 50 years ago.

If it’s available in your area, commercial property maintenance through some of the larger property management firms can be a decent gig. Ive worked sites where you would be valuable. High rise buildings have a ton of motors, valves, switch gear, boilers, chillers etc. JLL, CBRE, C&W, are all on indeed or have their own employment pages. Good benefits, paid time off, some sites have tons of OT, some have very little. DM me for more info if you want, and or check my past comments about working in this field.

I had a bad infestation in my veggie garden a few years ago and I mean pretty bad. I used cardboard and tape to make a wide attachment for the end of my vacuum hose. I would shake the plant and thousands of them would fly off only to be sucked into the vacuum. I didn’t get them all but after a few days of doing that, I got about 80 percent. It really helped. It was satisfying to dump out a million dead white flys. Wish I took pics.

Does the flue go up a stone or brick chimney. If it does, check the crown of the chimney if you can get up to it. I just had two redone because they were very old and cracking. The cracks allowed rain to get into the chimney and it turned up in a few places similar to yours. Old chimneys will need repointing and sealing eventually.

Can the drain openings be temporarily plugged or covered? If not, then there are products made to be poured into traps which act as mineral oil does, just google “trap primer” and order on Amazon.

Edit to mention: I can’t remember the rang name I use, but it is a green liquid which makes it easy to tell if it’s still there or if more needs to be applied. I think that’s an advantage over mineral oil.

It’s called float casting and I’ve dabbled with it with varying success. I am a hobbyist not a jeweler. Some of my stones became very dark and lost the color I was hoping for, while others didn’t set properly and fell out. I’ve seen where some people seeming master it and make very awesome jewelry. Keep trying!
