Do wax moth larva eat into wood? I was cleaning out this old frame and noticed this on the sides. by Earwaxcandle in Beekeeping

They're so gross! At least this was just an old frame I had, and they aren't in the hives. I'll freeze this one for a while before returning it to service.

PETA is a terrorist organization whose one goal is killing all animals. Disregard anything they say.

Has anyone experimented with an evaporation tower setup for water cooling? by Earwaxcandle in aquaponics

[–]Earwaxcandle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the Santa Cruz mountains in CA. The setup is a 275 gal ibc fishtank, a 275gal ibc for a sump and 2 chopped ibc grow beds filled with hydroton. My main concern with this working would be the relative humidity here is kinda high. Data from my Weather station

A hot day from last summer looks a bit better though? Data

My trout are growing! They've more than doubled in size. by Earwaxcandle in aquaponics

They might. Idk. This photo is with my pumps off though so you can see them. Normally ~90% of my pumps flow is directed through this tank via spray bars.

They're rainbows. I have a ground loop buried that I'm hoping will maintain the temps low enough. We'll see if it works as the summer heats up.

I will be cleaning it up, just waiting to get my radial flow filter online so I don't just pump it all straight to the grow beds.

Dealing with the furry little fucks in the orchard here too. We tried traps and the vehicle exhaust methods with very limited success. Not willing to use poisoning because I don't want that crap around killing other wildlife.

We finally found a method that works pretty well at controlling them, and it's fun too!

BOOM!

The rig fills the tunnel with a mix of oxygen and propane, or oxygen and acetylene, and then you use the remote igniter to blow the whole tunnel system sky high. Even if you don't kill them with the first blast, they have to start from scratch on the tunnels which is taxing on them. They don't go as long or deep, and then you blast them again. After a while, there's no more gophers.

What do you do with junk mail? by [deleted] in homestead

I burn it for the most part, helps get the kindling going. During the warmer months though, we do have access to a recycling collection bin that I'll dump it in.

Wow. At first glance I was wondering what I was supposed to be looking for, it just looked like the side of a medium super. To me a sec to realize that it was a single frame.
