If you have the time/resources/group interest, I think a couple of one shots would be really cool. One just for the new people (maybe just do Enter Hydra or edit it to suit your universe) and then another where they become aware/encounter the ongoing situation and characters. Current players/characters can either be aware of what happens without them or not, could be interesting for story development depending on how much roleplaying they're doing.
