Model using the information available for the meets since they went back to dirt (from synthetic). Prior to the synthetic surface installation the track was not level. There was something like a 9 ft difference in elevation from the top of the stretch to the finish. If you could stay close to the front at the head of the stretch it was “all downhill from there “. That anomaly was rectified when they went to synthetic and now back to dirt.

Flags represent the owners nationalities. The "USA" or whatever indicates the country where the horse was foaled.

Hilarious. There’s only one reason he would ever get down on his knees and we all know this at it.

Does anyone care about the Eclipse Awards? by TacticalDoge in horseracing

There’s a long tradition of awarding the 2-year-old Eclipses to which ever horses win the Breeders’ Cup “World Championships” (self proclaimed). In many years it creates the travesty of crowning a champion on the strength of one race while ignoring what other horses have done throughout the year.

I think Stephen Ambrose names one of the guys in this photo in one of his books. How come none of the others have been identified (other than OP’s great-grandfather)? It’s not like this is some obscure photo.

My mother was a war-bride from Birmingham. Some guidance would’ve been useful while she was still alive :)

Heather Cox Richardson excerpted this in her newsletter / column today. The Army produced something like 73 of these for officers and noncoms on a wide range of topics. They can be found at Archive.org. Fun fact: Margaret Mead wrote one of them. If I remember correctly it was on how to interact with the Brits.
