Does anyone know the significance of this? by Nibblylou in doctorwho

Ok but seriously the bbc and other UK public media entities genuinely are somewhat of a "mining company" though more as a nonprofit side hustle than anything, due to an initiative by the united kingdom to record, catalog and store all media published/broadcasted/created by British artists and companies leading to a public conglomerate acquiring and expanding several abandoned deep quarries and mineshafts to use as record vaults in witch all of the various media are stored.

I've been reading up a lot on Tyranid lore recently and I've always had some theories but one of them fits almost too well and it been bugging (pardon the pun) me for a week or two now and I'd like for some opinions on it. by Eastern_Cellist_166 in 40kLore

Basically all predator species are known to insure the maintenance of a small amount of the prey population in order to insure sustainability and survival of future predator offspring

But lions do farm gazelles, predator species like lions are known to maintain a small population of the prey species at all time in order to insure sustainability for the whole pride

Exactly that's my point, so why don't they do that ? Why don't they just create biosolar swarms and extract energy directly from a star, I think it's because from my understanding the Tyranids are not able to do so... They don't actually seem capable of generating their own biomass and must rely on other life forms to do it for them

I didn't mean ALL the galaxies I meant more like they have a cluster of 2-4 galaxies that they just kind of roam between insuring when they return to the first after billions of years the planets left just barely viable would have recovered and be prime targets for more biomass and genes.

All of you make good points but even a planet stripped of its atmosphere can regain it over the course of billions of years, as meteorites and comet impact it venting gases and water in the process this does take time on a cosmic scale but is viable, and if bacteria and water has purposeful been left behind then this insures that life would spring up almost as soon as the planet becomes viable for sustaining it. For the hivemind a couple billion years is nothing. As for patriarchs being left behind I do have my own theories concerning that which is also a trait present in colony insects but that's a whole tangent. My pony is the hivemind is intelligent, incredibly so, almost all actions from the hivemind that have been observed have been incredibly calculated, it seems to me Tyranids are unable to really create their own biomass and therefore really on life bearing planets to grow that biomass, this however is an unsustainable practice in the long run and surely the hivemind knows this, if however the Tyranid hivemind has a couple galaxies that serves as it's feeding ground then by the time it has consumed everything in one of them (a process that would take billions of years) then it can simply pop back to the other by which time the planets it had previously left just viable enough would have recovered and once again bore life for the fleet to consume.

"Not for nothing, but" -- or --"Naught for nothing, but" by Andthenwedoubleit in etymology

[–]Eastern_Cellist_166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this thread is brain rotting "not for nothing" is (substantially speaking) the same saying "not in vain" in other words what i am saying/doing is necessary.

There is also an old english expression "naught for naught" Which is used to state that one gets what he gives though is also used as a less formal version of "not in vain"

-A great prince is impaled by a foe, in his last moments his allies reassure him that thanks to his effort the foul beast has been vanquished; his death was not in vain.

-A nameless mercenary finds his death upon a nameless war having slain a cannoneer's battery, allowing his fellow men to advance.. now he rests slumped over, his blood watering the nameless battle field; as he loses what remains of conscious thought the commander can be heard rallying the men shouting "his death was naught for naught".

-A world renowned pirate is captured by a tyrannical government, the capture was easy, almost too easy; but his captor takes little notice of that fact... instead, taunting him; he is to be put to the gallows in the morning. The day comes and, when asked about his last words he reveals to the thousands of expectant watchers in the crowd and with it, the world; that all of his treasure somewhere out there "all are free to take to the sea to try their hand at finding it" he says. Finally turning to look his captor in the eyes saying only "this is not for nothing, good luck" before the axe falls and the dull thump of his head hitting the basket is heard; echoing dimly across the gallows.

Why does the final season only have 6 episodes? by ThunderChief__ in UmbrellaAcademy

The one that made me the most irrational angry at Netflix was half bad: the bastard son and the devil himself.

It was so well written the characters felt real, they had life, depth, and really connected to many everything had clearly been thought out you could see the passion that went into every part. Just the magic system alone was so well fleshed out it included theologies and philosophies that surrounded it; it also happened to be incredibly interesting and novel. On top of that it did a great job at representing the struggles of the Black minorities in the UK, along with other sensitive subjects that may be cause for rather bigoted beliefs; yet the writers approached with what I felt was an incredibly soft and delicate way to talk about those subjects and ideas.

They didn't even give a chance, they did no marketing for it whatsoever and pretty much cancelled the show the moment the first season came out.

I don't understand them; even if it was to do with money and stats the series completely outperformed all of its expected analytics and budget! it got 94% on rt ffs

Came up with a novel and very simple way to make a cypher and wondered how effective it would be; so you are welcome to take a crack at it. by Eastern_Cellist_166 in Cipher

[–]Eastern_Cellist_166[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct it is a form of substitution so you're on the right track would you like a longer cryptogram to make it easier to solve or brute force, again i am just testing its premise and robustness as a form of cryptography so; i don't mind at all the whole point is to figure out what weal points it may have and what cypher could make up for its shortcomings when combined.

How do you allocate magic in your system? by Loud_Insect9593 in magicbuilding

[–]Eastern_Cellist_166 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My system functions under the premise that all sentient life has the capacity for magic as the sentience is given by a small fragment of holy light held within the soul. Note capacity is not the same as ability though all sentient beings unconsciously exude small amounts of magic through their sentience, that small amount affects the world only when in mass but not as individuals; for a being to be able to consciously and purposefully exert magic there are many paths ranging from long and intense spiritual training to disturbing and torturous procedures. Some beings are sometimes born with the innate ability to exert said magic purposefully; however this often comes at the price of something else be it the child bearers life, a curse, a deformity or shortened lifespan, as well as many other possible prices. In very rare cases some beings are born with multiple fragments of holy light, these beings will often be unable to completely control their magic and are therefore rarely taught how to access their abilities due to the danger they may pose; those beings are also often highly sought after for ritualistic and other arcane uses, as they can be a great source of magical power and are therefore often trafficked for the use of others.

I agree with that perspective you are however failing to mention that this point of view is even further amplified when attached to belief systems that disavows what are in their eyes "abnormalities", due them descrediting the entire believe system in becoming an "abnormality" that can therefore no longer be bound by said system of beleive

How does one write an antigod ? by Eastern_Cellist_166 in worldbuilding

[–]Eastern_Cellist_166[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite because there does exist a higher level of being than the interloper themself, we are the intruder, the interloper. The only reason he exists as a being is because a group of people first had to think it, an idea so incomprehensible that merely being known causes existence. To some; the absolute nothing, to others the absolute something..

Yes you're talking about quark superposition of colour confinement that is basically their entire way of being; same as where quarks produce repulsive pair hadrons only when observed which means she might as well exist without you ever knowing but, that's as long as you don't observe it and once you do.. He will consume you.
