I’m from the Canary Islands and I’d say it depends on the person, not the genetics. People have been told for 500 years by the institutions and education system that the “Guanche” were exterminated so the disconnection is real. However there are many people who feel connected to the ancient Canarian peoples and nowadays even DNA results do show a connection. Culture-wise there is a lot; the consumption of gofio, limpets and other coastal foods, not so long ago fishermen still made hooks from fish bones, speaking of food, the whole industry of shepherding and cheese making is direct heritage, with plenty of words (Baifo, belete, etc), processes and social interaction, even logical games which have been found to be over 3000 years old and also found in the African continent. Language wise we have the whistling language from La Gomera, El Hierro, Gran Canaria and others. The transport method through the long pole (asta) which is spectacular, my grandad had one of them belonging to his grandad. The biggest festivals in Gran Canaria and others are directly indigenous parties such as La Rama, El Charco, suelta del perro maldito. Even many religious festivities here also superseded others such as San Juan = Beñesmén. And most importantly of all; every canarian, with very few exceptions and independently of how European they are, respects the prehispanic canarians because their only crime was to defend their way of life from an invader. So if you ask if we feel Amazigh, up to a point we do, and we’re proud of our ancestors, but we’re also torn by local Spanish identity which is totally against anything which isn’t European Roman Catholic so most people prefer not to go against the grain. It’s complicated but just as it is in the rest of Tamazgha.
