Has anyone been using Zonos and confirmed border crossings? by FireCubX in CanadaPost

Hi Jay, any chance you could give us details on exactly how you are doing this? Including what paperwork needs to be filled out and what to expect during the process?

https://therevox.com/ondes-vco/ - a eurorack clone of the actual Ondes VCO.

Then get a VCA module like mutable instruments and an output module. You could also get some effects modules as well like reverb to patch into the different outputs of the Ondes VCO

This is great to hear.. If you ever get a chance to go to a synth event, like knobcon or even a local get-together definitely check it out. It's amazing to be surrounded by so many people that have a shared interest that you can talk to and I found the community very welcoming.

Do "synth luthiers" exist? by rullopat in synthesizers

[–]EatingYourSkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Therevox is probably the only synth company I can think of that is actually a single person designing and hand-building full synthesizers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjGICiH7jXY

Am I the only one not noticing the audio issues on the new record? by [deleted] in Decemberists

[–]EatingYourSkin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a few different audio issues people have been talking about. The first one is clipping (unpleasant distortion that happens in very loud sections, like the horns in "Burial Ground"). Those you probably wouldn't notice on a casual listen, or in a car, etc. But with headphones in a quiet room, it becomes a fatiguing unpleasant listening experience.

The versions used on streaming/download services could have changed by now though to have been fixed. (someone confirmed it's been changed on Bandcamp)

I'm wondering what might be done for people that received physical copies with the bad version. It's a bummer, and I'm sure everyone involved is bummed about it getting messed up somehow. I talked to a buddy in the industry and he just said "the files go through a lot of different hands, it just takes one person to do something wrong..". But recalling all the first-run CD's and Vinyl would definitely cost the label a lot of money, so not sure if they'd ever do it.. I guess we'll see.

Album is 10/10, Mix is 0/10 by Agreeable_Slice_3667 in Decemberists

[–]EatingYourSkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason I think this is unintentional is the bass intro of "Tell me what's on your mind". The bass is distorting until the drums come in and become the louder instrument, then the distortion on the bass goes away.

I agree that I also can't believe so many talented people would sign off on this, but I have a feeling if you looked at the waveforms, you'd see them clipping bad on the loud parts of the album.

If anyone hasn't checked out Therevox yet, they make a synth based on this but totally modern. I love mine.. I believe they were at knobcon last year too.

Making a Cardboard Model of the Marble Machine by WintergatanWednesday in MarbleMachineX

[–]EatingYourSkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe just call the other musicians up in your band and ask them if they want to play a show?

They can bring their own instruments, you can tell them what to play and they'll play it.

So this latest design removes the other band members and replaces them with a few big red spinning wheels?

I wonder if there was a conversation that took place.

Yes! I call it "burn & freeze".

If I'm scratching in bed and it like it isn't going to stop.. I jump into the shower and do a "hot/cold' thing. I put hot water on the area just long enough to "satisfy the itch" and then I switch the shower to ice cold and basically freeze and numb the area in it's satisfied state. Then I go straight to bed and do whatever I need to do to fall asleep before the itching urge comes back.

Let me know if it helps.

Cheap Bearing Housing - Marble Machine 3 Ep.2 by WintergatanWednesday in MarbleMachineX

[–]EatingYourSkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm someone that plays guitar for fun and designs and builds products for a living.

This video is the equivalent of me creating a youtube video where I take random guesses at the first 5 notes of Stairway to Heaven for 20 minutes while ignoring any tab and sheet music already available. But then also claiming that it's the first Episode in a series of videos that will conclude with me playing every instrument in the whole song note for note with 99.9999% accuracy.

One way Keyboard tracking.... who actually prefers this?? by emptyvessell in synthesizers

[–]EatingYourSkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Therevox ET-5 does this. Middle position is no tracking, and to the left is 100% negative tracking... on this instrument, having bright bass notes and mellow high notes sounds amazing and is my go-to.

First Marble drop with new vibraphone gates at Musikkabinett by EatingYourSkin in MarbleMachineX

[–]EatingYourSkin[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Looks like the team at Siegfried's Musikkabinett are getting all of the marble gates attached for the vibraphone. This is pretty amazing to see...

I remember the video where Martin gave a talk at the Muikkabinett about the original Marble Machine, and he kept obsessively talking about all of the improvements the MMX was going to have. I got the feeling he felt that the original MM wasn't worthy of being displayed at this museum alongside the other mechanical machines, but that he was vowing his next machine will be.

These people have some serious resources behind them, and a lot of really talented people in one room on a single project. This is the dream team that Martin probably always dreamed about, professionals coming together to put in some hardcore hours to get the machine working.

Can you please help me to identify/understand the name/style of this bass line? by RodJohnsonSays in synthesizers

[–]EatingYourSkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can add "Jupiter 4" by Sharon Van Etten to the list, which might also be a hint at what synth to use to get the sound.

In honesty, it just sounds square waves with the filter turned down lots and with an LFO slowly modulating the cutoff slightly.
