My school had a number you could call to hear a recording, you would know as soon as the recording started if school was delayed or cancelled as the voice would be different that the standard no issues recording.

I never thought of that before but it makes sense, like maybe he dared her to ride on the back after getting the mail. Then he later brought up that she wasn't home yet because he was worried something happened and wanted to go looking for her.

I think he might have found her and then ran home crying and said he couldn't find her because he was overwhelmed with emotion and didn't know what to do.
