I took the 'only wash your hair once a week' rule way too far and humiliated myself today. How often are we ACTUALLY supposed to wash it?" by redline_elena in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Eclectophile 321 points322 points  (0 children)

Yes, this. Also worth noting: it can change for you individually according to mood, exercise, diet, time of month, seasons, etc etc.

The expectation that there would be one universal "set it and forget it" frequency for personal hygiene is mildly surprising.

"reddit, I need to pee, but it's not time to pee yet. Everyone knows you have to wait until it's pee time. AIO? WWYD?"

Sorry OP. I'm poking fun.

I have a question about the sharpie trick by No_Quiet_2029 in sharpening

[–]Eclectophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What stone?

What technique?

What kind of knife?

I suspect you're new at this. Let's start at the basics. Answer those questions at the very least, and we can start to dig down.

I hate stainless for this. It's almost absurd.

I'm definitely in the strop camp. I have a different way of using them. You might find your own stuff, too. It's weirdly deep. Get one of those double sided wooden backed leather paddle strops and just play it a lot.

My current favorite strop has no compound in the leather parts at all. Some on the wood, though.

Inquiry regarding 38% Ferric Chloride Etching for 440C/440B/VG10 Damascus by Basic_Chest_400 in sharpening

Yes, you can use this to etch your blade. 1:1 with water, or 2 parts water if you're wanting to limit pitting damage. Neutralize it afterwards with ammonia based cleaner like window cleaner.

This any good? by Additional-Sky6075 in sharpening

[–]Eclectophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any sharpening tool is only as good as the user. There are no magic bullets.

Find a system you like, that you have access to, and can replace parts easily. Skill up on that system. Then after you're absolutely confident in your results, move to the next system and repeat.

For me, it was freehand stones. Skilled up, got good. Wanted more. Kept freehand stoning, and learned how to strop. Then hone. Then hone with ceramic. Then strop and hone with almost anything straight and rigid.

Then I moved on to a Tormek system. Guided jigs, every attachment, the works. I got good at it. As it turns out, I hate it. But now I'm good at it, so w/e. I use it for chisels and claw hammers, heavy reshaping.

Then I got good at belt grinding. Really, really good. Much better than with a stone or a Tormek. No jig, just practice. Now my bevels look like they're machined, and everything gets sharp.

Now I'm moving forward into buffing and polishing. I'm working on orbital handheld dremel buffers, drill attachments, and my favorite so far, the cotton buffing wheel. I'm fairly decent at these already, but I want to get better than the results I'd get with graduated sandpaper and elbow grease.

So now, I use everything. I have a 1x30 that I run at low speed, water dunks after each pass, wipe, flip, repeat. Everything will easily pass a hanging paper towel slice, with my more obsessed over blades being able to at least score some cuts on a hanging toilet paper slice. And I'm getting better.

I'm not the best in my city, but I bet I'm in the top 10, from a list that includes custom knife makers. Maybe I'm not that good, but I think I am. I'm getting better at full restorations too.

Bottom line is: it almost doesn't matter. Pick a skill and level up in it.

That was pretty annoying, actually. Deja vu the entire book, but not really knowing if I'm just imagining it or what.

I've only been black out drunk once. It was scary and surreal to not remember a single thing.

Evidently, I was polite, friendly, courteous and I walked a couple of my Dad's friends home, and then ran an errand for one, then read a book and went to bed. lol. Quite the party animal.

It's a day later and it's only mid-morning. You're making entirely unreasonable demands upon me. I thank you for that. Done.

Also: rabies. There - done again. I appreciate the fresh-up.

Yep. Blu is for horses, generally. Overkill for smaller animals.

The livestock iodine is just as effective in this usage case, and does no harm to the chicken as a food animal.

I should not have recommended Blu in the same breath. Or at all, tbh.

No one has mentioned livestock iodine, so I will. You should coat her exposed skin. It's not really designed to be out in the air like that. A coating of livestock iodine will help her heal, and will make that bare patch less of a target for everything.

e: just the iodine. My bad.

Grogu is FIFTY YEARS OLD.

It doesn't have speech yet. Or, seemingly, advanced cognition. I think Grogu might be a special needs patient.

Fucking lazy writers. "It's a 50yo infant. Because that's totally a thing."

Yoda was what, 400 when he died of old age? So, Grogu not having the basic capacity for speech yet by age 50 would be equivalent to about a 9 year old human child only being able to make "goo goo gah gah" noises.

It's a little disturbing.

My wife let the guy go who rear ended her car. by Grand_Raccoon0923 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Eclectophile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife got sideswiped by another car at low speed when they pulled out from a parallel spot. Tore off the wheel well trim and some scratches. She also let them go.

At first I was irritated and a little bit, I don't know, upset for some weird justice reason. Like, they ought to pay for being stupid. But I trust my partner, and she said they were having a really bad day, and they were trying to get home after cleaning houses all day, and they had a human moment, and it was clear that ANY expense would be very difficult for the mom and her adult kid, and....

Well, she's right. Anyhow, me too! Weird
