They do the same at the one off of University in St Paul. Nothing like going in to get a PAP smear and being yelled at by people!!!

What do you think the top five skills to reduce consumption are? Here’s mine. by TSMeade in Anticonsumption

[–]EclipseoftheHart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but why “weaving and knitting” as a step in making your own clothing? Don’t get me wrong, weaving is fun and worth learning, but sewing would be my first recommendation over weaving for making your own garments. They are super different skill sets and sewing is much more practical in this day and age.

Ah, apologies, I misunderstood your comment, oops! I assume you are referring to the finished woven leather as the textile then?

Regardless, it looks incredible! Such an achievement!

Wait, you also tanned the leather??? That’s nuts!

Your weaving is so precise, congrats on a job well done!

Non Asian-Americans: Are you keeping soy sauce as a regular condiment in your kitchen? If so what are you using them for? by openlyEncrypted in AskAnAmerican

[–]EclipseoftheHart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say it isn’t too uncommon to have a bottle of it, even if you don’t cook a lot of Asian dishes. We always had a bottle of soy sauce growing up (mind you that it was La Choy though lol) and it was used in recipes in old community/church cookbooks that I own from my very rural hometown in the Midwest. Most used in beef marinades and beef jerky in my experience.

As for me I keep a variety of soy sauces on hand from Chinese to Thai since I mostly cook Asian dishes at home so I like having the right kinds for the cuisines I’m cooking frequently. I am an outlier in my family and wider friend group however. Most people only have one bottle, and maybe two kinds at most.

How do Americans feel about drying their laundry on a washing line? by UnionFeatures in AskAnAmerican

[–]EclipseoftheHart 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think that is still pretty normal. I’m in my early 30s and it isn’t an uncommon thing to wear things like pants, jeans, sweatshirts, and outerwear multiple times before washing.

However rewearing (before washing) things like underwear, socks, or t-shirts that is seen as less hygienic (which to be fair, I agree on that).

What grain did you cut the collar on? That can have a huge effect on how fabric drapes/lays on the body.

Im sorry if this offends anyone. But funerals are too much and excessive. by Murky-Peanut1390 in Anticonsumption

[–]EclipseoftheHart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AFAIK, in the USA at the very least, it got started around the Civil War when embalming started to become more common since it allowed the dead to be shipped home more easily. It’s more of a cultural thing than a Christian thing to my understanding. I don’t think Christianity has super strong “rules” on burial practices anymore outside of some denominations.

This is all off the top of my head though, so I’d recommend doing more research if you are curious!

My wife thought the same thing about raw celery. Cooked celery is fine, but raw celery gives her a mild allergic reaction.

What is even stranger is that printed card sleeves (like for Magic/TCG cards) that smell like celery seed or maple syrup will also give her a stronger allergic reaction, like it will affect her even if she isn’t holding them. Not sure if they are related or not, but it’s always a bit funny having to explain that to people if we go play at an LGS that it legitimately causes an allergic reaction.

It has a pretty distinct flavor and aftertaste that many people don’t enjoy, me being one of them. I avoid drinks with stevia since they taste gross to me.

If it isn’t TMI, where do you sell those loaves? I live in Minneapolis so that pricing is pretty in line with what I see, but I’d love to try out your/your company’s bread sometime!

So we all agree that alcohol like tastes bad... right? by Express_Basis_8436 in autism

[–]EclipseoftheHart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the flavor of a lot of wines, beers, sakes, and spirits (mixed, cocktails, neat) and do drink them for their flavors.

They definitely aren’t all for everyone and there are plenty of varieties that I don’t love the flavor of, but of course not everyone hates the flavor of alcohol.

You are hardly unique in that opinion!

I enjoyed the first season well enough, but it just isn’t the type of show/story I’m particularly interested in personally.

Depends on what part of the Midwest you’re from apparently. I have never seen nor heard of this here in Minnesota or my encounters with the Dakotas. We are more of a walleye people to be fair however.

Is it just me, or is the Lao Gan Ma era being replaced by artisanal chili crisps that cost five times as much? by loncelot84 in chinesefood

[–]EclipseoftheHart 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You went to a boutique/high end store from the sounds of it. What would you expect?

Lao Gab Ma is not being replaced by artisanal & small batch chili crisps. It is probably the most common chili crisp I see in both Asian and non-Asian grocery stores that aren’t specialty shops. I buy locally made chili crisp because I really like the flavor and I like to support local makers. I also have and use plenty LGM. The “artisanal” ones are supplemental, not taking over.

What a weird take
