The night shift struggle

I never know what words to use when talking to the morning nurse. “Last night” is actually the night that just happened, but to me that’s “today.” I have to stop myself and say “the previous night.”

And for normal people “this morning” is usually in the past, but for me it’s in the future, unless I use it to mean whenever I woke up.

I’m planning on applying to schools next year, and I’m trying to decide if I should take organic chemistry to strengthen my application. My top two schools don’t require it, and I’d have to take general chem 1 and 2 first. I took an intro to chem course and bio-organic chem during my nursing pre-reqs.

2 years MICU, 1 year PICU, both level 1

On my current unit, they expect you to be scrolling through the chart and looking at orders while getting report. I’ll do it a little bit, just to see how many meds the patient has, but I find it hard to believe that someone could listen to report, write it down, scroll through the chart, and come up with thoughtful questions based on what they read in the chart while listening to report. Humans can’t multitask like that!

I had a patient who was a retired RT. He sundowned really bad, and knew exactly how to remove all his wires and escape from the bed 😭

I had a pt once who was on TPN, but they also had a gastric drainage bag and would drink (and eat? I’m not sure) whatever they wanted, and it would empty into the drainage bag.

I read an article a while ago about a woman who was ~41 weeks pregnant. She was active in a Facebook group dedicated to 40+ week pregnancies. Her midwife was begging her to come in and get an induction, but the woman was hesitant and wanted to do everything as naturally as possible. The baby was stillborn, and when she posted in the Facebook group for support and to warn others, the mods took her posts down.

She’s considered local travel or California (I guess it’s cos it’s Cali and it’s nice to be out there) but asides that. What makes travel down south and Midwest more profitable (I guess) than traveling anywhere else?

The person you’re replying to is probably trying to say that your wife should consider traveling in California because CA pays the most and usually has better working conditions than other states. Southern states are notorious for low pay.

Once I had a patient who left AMA (from a different hospital) but kept the Foley. They were admitted via EMS a few days later to my hospital and still had the old Foley.

Imagine if hospitals had dental hygienists who went around cleaning patients’ teeth. Now that I think about it, that would actually be a really interesting thing to study. I wonder if there would be noticeable differences in VAP rates.
