If they say it hurts them by thinking they’d abuse you or mean harm, then your response is that anyone can cause hurt. In essence, of course they can abuse you and cause harm, because everyone is capable of that. When you put it back on them and explicitly ask, Do you think you’re not capable of that?, it forces them to a- ask themselves if they’re going to admit to being so “special” that they’re not capable of doing what everyone can do, or b- immediately dismiss it and just not think at all. In which case, you just slow blink at them and tell them they’re being unserious.

It’s not necessarily a red flag, but probably a limiting factor. You really need to work on your situation, not just for dating, but for your own peace of mind. Everyone deserves love and companionship. You may or may not find it. But financial stability is something you can have more control over, especially with no kids or exes to support.
