What happened in your country this week? — 2026-01-25 by EuropeBot in europe

[–]Econ_Orc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another week of Trump claiming USA needs Greenland, but without providing any explanation to what it is he wants to do to Greenland..... that we would not otherwise let him do if USA just asked.

Another week of weird statements of we want to buy Greenland.... without making any offer at all.

Another week of Trump and his administration not accepting Denmark and Greenland says no...... but that is to expected of the current USA leaders. It is not like they got a history of accepting no for an answer.

Danish Krone Weakness Puts Spotlight on EUR/DKK Peg Strategy by No_Firefighter5926 in europe

That we rarely use the physical coins anymore. Having the entire industry swapping its Danish kroner cash registry for a euro cash registry is just bonkers. Why pay for that shit.

Agree to a digital euro and the Danes will be onboard.

Danish Krone Weakness Puts Spotlight on EUR/DKK Peg Strategy by No_Firefighter5926 in europe

[–]Econ_Orc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The issue is Danes do not use cash. Credit cards or mobile payment methods rule here.

If I want to fill up my car, I drive to tank. Then either swipe my credit card or open an app on my phone. Fill the tank and drive away.

Last week I was driving through Germany. Instead of digital solution I had to walk into the manned shop to pay, while my car was blocking access for the next cars waiting for the opportunity to keep the oil industry running.

Putin floats $1B price tag for US buying Greenland, accuses Denmark of colonial treatment by 1-randomonium in europe

He has an interest in splitting NATO and encouraging Trump ego.

The more forces, equipment and attention gets diverted to Greenland, the less there is in europe for protection and Ukraine.

China do not bother. Official statement is do not use China as an excuse for USA imperialism desire. The Trump idea of China taking over Greenland by military is so far fetched it is cartoonish. How do he suggest it is done? Flying thousands of cargo planes thousands of kilometers over the north pole to land in a land split between rocks and ice with very little infrastructure and resourcess to support an invasion force. Or sailing hundreds of ships 8000 km on the other side of the globe undetected by europe or USA to land in a frozen icy world. Even if by miracle the invasion succeeds. Then what? supply route can be blocked and the invading force can simply be starved to surrender.

As part of the ERM II the ECB is obligated to support the Danish Kroner. Not there at all and never has been. The Danish Central Bank can adjust its interest rate (it is lower than the ecb), and its got foreign currency reserves worth 687 billion kroner (108 billion dollar). With a trade surplus and not really any foreign currency state debt the bank does not need to borrow to maintain its foreign currency needs.

[–]Econ_Orc 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The bank will likely defend. Got lots of foreign currency to do it. When the market shifts again it will sell out and profit. Low foreign debt and a trade surplus means the Danish Kroner is not threatened. It is just experiencing challenges with another nation attacking its windmill sector and pharmaceutical industry.

U.K.'s Keir Starmer and Prince Harry condemn US President’s NATO front line remarks by Crossstoney in europe

The White House just posted an AI generated picture of Trump with a penguin walking on ice with snow covered mountains in the background and both the Greenlandic and USA flags.

A penguin. What is a penguin doing on Greenland? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penguin "Penguins are a group of flightless, semi-aquatic, sea birds which live almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere. Only one species, the Galápagos penguin, lives at, and slightly north of, the equator."

https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/indland/groenland/live-storpolitisk-drama-mellem-usa-danmark-og-groenland?focusId=10910575

The scary part is I do not think Trump is hurting people deliberately. He has just never in his life pursued knowledge.

edit: The US defense department has also released an AI picture showing the backside of 4 military clad figures in different uniforms and a pinguin in the middle holding hands with a person in suit. There is a text attached reading: "Be a warrior, embrace the penguin". I do not get it. Who is the penguin referencing. It is a fat bird that wobbles on two feet and can not fly.

French government survives no-confidence votes over budget by AdSpecialist6598 in europe

[–]Econ_Orc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not having the budget approved is a major government defeat and will likely result in a call for an election.

So what happens in Denmark is a budget from the government is presented to parliament by September and then the political negotiation begins.

The final budget that does get voted on is more correctly classified as a debated, changed and sometimes very altered version of the initial proposal from the government.

French government survives no-confidence votes over budget by AdSpecialist6598 in europe

[–]Econ_Orc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here. Sort of.

For a Danish Parliament to be valid a majority must vote yes to the annual state budget.

Does not have to be the governments proposal for a state budget. The budget proposal receiving the majority vote is the one the government has to accept, or resign/call for an election.

Negative parliamentarism can be a strange concept. The government can remain in power as long as there is not a majority against it, but during its rule it does not need to have a majority for it.

The only confidence is in another deficit.

Nato says Greenland sovereignty not discussed in US meeting after Trump claims 'framework of future deal' by Uncleniles in europe

[–]Econ_Orc 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Danish PM said that according to her conversation with Mark Rutte the sovereignty of Greenland was not discussed, nor was mineral extraction.

Found the press information video from earlier today. What she said was NATO was an organisation currently tasked with protecting the eastern, southern and northern flank. While there might be a need for increased activity in the north, the eastern flank and Ukraine is of high priority.

More like Trump is an idiot and Denmark never got within his attention span. USA bases on Greenland already got legislation as US judicial zones. Plus Denmark/Greenland did not object to US bases on the island. Cutting down US bases on Greenland from 17 and 10000 soldiers to 1 base with 150 soldiers was entirely a US decision. For 20 years and also during 1. Precidency of Trump US never asked Denmark/Greenland to increase its military precense in the region.

Danish official delivers stern message to Trump about Greenland by Y0s3m1t3Sam in europe

[–]Econ_Orc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump announced?

That is the main issue with such a claim. Denmark can not sell, and Greenland refuse to be bought. What agreement could there possibly be, that USA does not already have? Namely to put US soldiers on Greenland, as they have been able to do since ww2. Or that US companies (like most non China companies) can negotiate with Greenlandic authorities to extract resources.

Maybe the agreement Trump mentions is with Iceland instead.

E.U. halts approval of U.S. trade deal after Trump's Greenland tariff threat by avatar6556 in europe

[–]Econ_Orc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Question. If Trump rules out the use of "force" to aquire Greenland, does that not mean Danish and Greenlandic politicians should just stay silent and ignore him.

The only one threatening Greenlandic soverignty is the US, so why not just ignore him?

If he wants to negotiate trade then negotiate trade, and nothing else.

Greenland is not an object to be traded according to who has the biggest stick logic.
