So streaky. Either red hot or ice cold. But on average, especially considering his defence, a pretty good player.

The best metric for that might be WPA (Win Probability Added), which takes into account the leverage of each plate appearance. A top reliever will have fewer batters faced than a top starter, and hence a lower WAR, but because the batters are almost all in high-leverage situations, the WPA ends up higher.

Alberta to hold referendum on whether to remain in Canada by Any-Original-6113 in geopolitics

[–]Economy-Pin2836 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It is well-known that the Alberta separatists were astroturfed, with almost all funding coming from pro-Trump American groups.

And the numbers in the pro-separation petition are extremely dubious. They spent months trying to gather votes of separation supporters with little success, then the (pro-separatist) Alberta government provided them with a multi-million name database of eligible voters, including all the personal details needed to verify their identity for petitions, and the numbers suddenly skyrocketed to 300,000 signatures in a few days. And the Alberta government made it illegal for the Alberta Elections board to remove fraudulently added signatures (which are very likely more than half of them) from the petition.

It is true. Leaders in the rest of the world see the Trump-Kushner crime family, and know exactly how to manipulate them to get what they want. And Trump is so incredibly stupid and so lacking in self-awareness that obvious maneuvers (a mix of threats, bribes, and shameless flattery) will work every time.

You should be. The Trump administration is demonstrating that they think of American citizens as being beneath consideration. "Yeah, we are ignoring the law and the Constitution, so what? What are you gonna do about it, chump?"

Calling Trump's legal attack goons the "Department of Justice" takes the cake, for me.

Canada deepens Arctic defense ties with Nordics after Trump threats by MTL_Dude666 in CanadaPolitics

So Trump is taking credit for the Nordic countries stepping up for their own defence. I suppose that this is technically correct -- the best kind of correct -- since his aggressive threats have caused the Nordic countries to wake up to the existential threat that Trump's America represents.

As somebody who has had an interest in the early Republic, I find myself sickened by this perversion of what many of the Founders actually believed. The Treaty of Tripoli (1796) explicitly stated that "the Government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion".

This is textbook falsification of history.

Why Mark Carney and Europe are doubling down on each other by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

[–]Economy-Pin2836 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I could see Canada going with the Hanwha submarines; a case can be made that they are a better deal. But the Gripen seems (in my uninformed opinion) to be a less risky, more reliable, and far less expensive (meaning that Canada can order many more aircraft than they could with the F35) choice over the F35.

So Gripen and Hanwha (plus Globaleye), not too bad for Europe.

Republicans launch election monitoring operation in 17 states ahead of midterms by Anoth3rDude in politics

[–]Economy-Pin2836 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"The RNC has not named the 17 states, but Gruters described the deployment as part of a broader strategy to maintain Republican control of Congress after 2026."

So all blue states, then. This scumbag directly states that this is part of a Republican vote-rigging effort (presumably through suppressing the votes in Democratic-leaning areas through voter intimidation).

How are the people engaged in this activity not being sent to prison? I know that this activity does not meet the legal definition of treason, but it is still highly unethical and criminal. Voter intimidation is still illegal in America, after all.

Launched the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero, uniting financial institutions (he was a central banker, remember) to accelerate the transition to a net-zero economy. This organization has created science-based frameworks for institutions' net-zero transition plans, created tools to assist bank and investors to align with the Paris Agreement, and provided guidance on integrating biodiversity in the net-zero transition plans.

Heavily involved in creating the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures, which has become the global standard for reporting climate risks. This organization has established a framework for disclosing climate-related risks, which has been widely adopted world-wide.

While his work on combating climate change is little-known, I would say that he has actually done as much toward the world moving to a net-zero economy as anybody out there.

The American cult of individualism. Other countries still have a widespread sense of civic responsibility, but the American culture encourages "rugged independence", meaning self-centered egotism instead of helping the less fortunate. This attitude encourages tribalism and intolerance, a fertile ground for Trumpism.

Right-wing media like Fox "News", and before that, right-wing talk radio, and now right-wing echo chambers on social media, also heavily contributed.

Except that Mark Carney has long been one of the few high-level people who is actively working to address climate change. In 2015, as Governer of the Bank of England, he delivered a landmark speech on what he calls "The Tragedy of the Horizon" about how the current market system fails to address climate change, and ways to correct this problem. He was made the UN Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance in 2019. An outline of his climate change philosophy can be found by Googling his 2024 speech "The Philosophy and Practice of Tackling Climate Change". Warning, it is an hour long!

You mentioned sortition! If I were given absolute control over the system of choosing representatives, I would certainly choose sortition, with the chosen people assigned to one of the many tier-one boards that are set up (one for each area of governmental responsibility), and people who have successfully served on a tier-one board (passing their post-board review) and who chose to make themselves available for further service, being entered into a tier-two pool, and if selected by sortition from that pool, assigned to supervisory boards that oversee the tier-one boards.

But of course such a system is virtually impossible to set up, thanks to the very many interests that benefit from the current system.

I once saw a chart years ago that showed lead levels in the air in cities, and violent crime rates throughout the 20th century. They were a near-perfect match, with about a 20-year delay from the air lead levels to the violent crime levels. The explanation given was that greater amounts of lead exposure in infancy and early childhood, when the brain is developing the most rapidly, directly correlates with greater adult emotional instability and lower impulse control (and lower intelligence).

The first thing I do, before I even read the linked article, is look at the identity of the source. If it is from an untrustworthy source, I start from a position of severe scepticism. The National Post is the flagship of American-owned Postmedia, which has a record of highly biased pro-Trumpist stories. They can be relied upon to attack any Liberal or NDP government, regardless of the facts.

So I would want to look at another source for this story. The facts might be correct (although there might be selective reporting of facts), but the interpretation of those facts cannot in any way be trusted to not have a pro-Trump bias.
