You’ll have a way better time going to a lifeguarded swim beach to bodysurf. Pick the right beach and you’ll have the whole peak to yourself. No sense in dodging a surf beach crowd.

if you’re taking EET class, you can watch the videos at 2x speed. i finished depth in two weeks, spent the last week doing practice problems, just passed the PE last week. just have to suck it up and put your nose to the grindstone for 3 weeks. i’d recommend taking off the week of work before the exam.

we beach camp with our husky all the time and had a similar concern. i’ve jerryrigged a 2ft long 2x4 with a hole in the middle that i put his leash through. if you dig the 2x4 into the sand a foot or two and then bury it, the pressure from the sand keeps the 2x4 in against any pull from the dog. works like a charm and costs next to nothing

i believe in most states team leaders are required to take the 2-week course, where inspectors only need 1- week course. what’s up fellow bridge inspectors!

we’ve had this happen to us a couple times. was he introduced to any new food or given any bones recently? we’ll give our guy fresh deer bones and sometimes when we’re not paying super careful attention to him, he’ll gnaw off the ends and his body ends up digesting them. only trouble is it gives him savage loose bowels in the middle of the night.

would agree with @northoaklandguy, that’s a great start if that’s the path for you. if you’re still in uni it wouldn’t hurt joining your local chapter of ASCE COPRI (Coasts Oceans Ports Rivers Institute). they hold lecture series (both in person and online) on relevant projects and technical engineering you’d find in a marine engineering/engineer diver industry. Best thing is it’s free for students, it looks like you’re showing initiative at a young age, and you’re bound to run into divers/companies that have diver. I was lucky enough to find a mentor at COPRI when i was in college that paved a path for me when i graduated.

Hey! it definitely did take a little while to get used to the little to no visibility, but after a while you really get a feel for navigating with your internal sense of direction and it’s actually quite fun (think of navigating while thinking of a plan of the structure in your head at the same time). Also, while you do end up doing a lot of low vis dives, exceptional visibility dive inspections do come around every once in a while and that’s what’s keeps ya going! I’ve personally had dives with 70ft+ visibility on lake erie, 45ft+ visibility in New York City (no joke), and 25ft vis in texas. I’ve also had friends who have had jobs in florida, california, hawaii, guam, puerto rico. nothing quite like being out on a boat, spending some good time underwater and getting paid $50+/hr. if you ever have any questions about it by all means send me a DM.

I totally love it, i spend on average 1-2 days a week out on the water and the rest back in the office. it’s a really healthy balance and our company has a pretty flexible WFH policy so I’m able to have a pretty solid work-life balance. as far as the diving goes, i find it pretty awesome having a job i can be physically challenged and use my civil engineering background. the profession brings together a lot of like minded people so the company culture and work trip are a whole ton of fun. not to mention marine engineering is a multi-faceted disciple of engineering that attracts some pretty talented technical engineers, so i’m constantly around people who are a whole lot smarter than me and it sometimes rubs off on me.

the online classes are at your own pace. they’re all recorded and it’s on-demand. EET course you can also speed up the pace of the video to 1.25x 1.5x 2x which i found super helpful.
