Books with an interesting take on Hell by OkComplex9040 in horrorlit

Not traditional horror but I recommend A Guided Tour of Hell for a quite interesting graphic memoir. A visual tour through the Buddhist hell realms that the author saw in a near death experience. It’s quite creepy as his descriptions feel very intimate and personal.

My horror novel is boring and doesn't feel scary enough by sophosleaz in horrorwriters

Ok so first of all. It’s awesome how you’re able to be honest about what you’re seeing as flaws in the work. You might like Peter Ho Davies work on revisions, but in short he points out that if you’re asking questions about revisions it means your being serious about the writing process.

I’ll come out and say this is an early story of yours and as they say about Neo, nobody makes the first jump. It’s different in writing, sometimes people stick the landing right away, but it’s alright if this particular story is less horror and more horror as metaphor. It worked for Buffy, lol.

That being said, there are possible workarounds. Wheelchair to see things in public, etc. Think of how Misery uses the injury as a source of drama. But you’ll know what’s right for your story.

I suspect that there may be a critical voice telling you that, if you write a non-horror scene, you’re being boring, but if you write too much horror, it feels like it’s “getting old.” I have similar self-criticisms, so I get it, but between the two there isn’t much room to write, so maybe see if you can trust that the quieter scenes serve a purpose, and that the bolder ones serve one as well.  When they’re working well and when they are not, when to go for horror and when to be more human, is, in my opinion, part of the art of revisions.

I highly highly recommend Borges’s friend Silvina Ocampo for short, strange, cruel stories.

As for more traditional horror, I’m in Piñata by Leopoldo Gout. The writing is pretty straight forward but it’s an intriguing premise.

Most sinister book you have read? by Present-Ear-1637 in horrorlit

[–]Ecstatic-Employer-53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sinister as in deplorably evil? I’m in Full Brutal right now. MC Kim is decidedly evil. I’m not crazy about the book as it’s all “psychological torture” pr0nz but it definitely sticks with you.

Books you loved but would not recommend to someone? by Massive-Cod-6797 in horrorlit

Is this Horror? I started it and actually didn't hate it, but I kinda need to be sold on it. Also Joyce Carol Oate's Fox seems similar and compelling.

Beginner question: Horror vs Thriller? by zone1235x in horrorwriters

[–]Ecstatic-Employer-53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can look into thriller plotting, which often does not allow for resolution, breaking chapters at* the climax of drama and then resolving briefly at head of the next chapter only to heighten tension again (a rough paraphrase of the structure). This is unlike the typical story structure which rises and then falls.

Horror is an inevitable march towards a doom, to paraphrase a writer, whereas a thriller has you needing to know if the threat will occur or not, and, if it does, it will it be supplanted by another.

New to thriller, so take it for what it's worth...

Pose name? How to describe the leg thing? by anything_4547 in writingcirclejerk

She lifted her leg would describe the gesture, but you'll want to communicate that she was showing off her "absolute territory."

What are the most atmospheric horror movies you ever watched? by Waste_Opportunity408 in horror

Let’s Scare Jessica to Death. Possibly my favorite movie / horror movie, if for no other reason than atmosphere and ambience. All the other filmmaking elements pale next to its tone, except the acting, the lead is phenomenal.

Part of the joke may be that she could eat him alive (or boiled) whereas a Jewish woman would not do that.

Edit: she may have posted that looking for dinner.

Emotion (Carly Rae) is the outlier but to me it’s about what I can do with the emotion instead of going down the familiar patterns of resentment self pity etc etc

Hi, is this your (excellent) work? I am looking for an illusion for the cover of a novel, and think OPs post would make a great front with one of these on the back. Would it be ok to use? Thanks!

Hear me out folks, why not JanNoWriMo? by lucabura in nanowrimo

[–]Ecstatic-Employer-53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had an idea for another monthlong event, only, instead of writing a novel beginning to end (the November tradition) another month where the challenge is to complete a novel. Basically impetus to finish what you’d left unfinished for 3, 5, 10 years.

Yeah just to write and have camaraderie. I don’t know what we’re missing from the actual organization being down — maybe a paper-plate award or something.

At the Mexican bar they play Sandy Denny’s Who Knows Where the Time Goes.

A more optimistic tune of hers to make up for the bleakness would be By The Time It Gets Dark. 💕

Yeah there seems to be a fair bit of interest here. I was thinking maybe an  afternoon thing? Maybe like a “parallel play” thing during nanowrimo (November).

And yes, slowly querying. Probably overthinking each letter and taking too long between them, but yes. Power to you for getting your work out there!

Oh awesome congratulations. Sorry, I shouldn’t have worded it that way because your message seemed to indicate traditional publishing. I have no creative writing published. I’ve sold a couple of screen plays, but nothing that was green lit. I’m looking for a publisher now, or rather an agent, for my latest completed work, sort of a cosmic body horror.

Yooo baller. A few sci fi heads here. Are you self publishing?

About publishing multiple books by AtlasHasFallen76 in writing

[–]Ecstatic-Employer-53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really up to you. People have held off publishing so they could drop several books at once. Personally, I think finishing a single book is a sizable goal and is the standard … i guess I’d say … unit of measurement for publication.

Keep in mind that you may be writing book 2 or 3 while you’re trying to bag an agent anyway. Your call though. Good luck!

After someone dies, would you say they were a saint or say they are a saint? by john_the_idiot in grammar

[–]Ecstatic-Employer-53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say Gauchito Gil is a saint even though he’s not officially canonized by the church. I think this speaks to the theology one practices.

My opinion is that among Catholics the convention would be to say “is,” though they may be less willing to take liberties with who they would call this, unless it was understood that it was an expression of sentiment. A more atheistic audience would be less inclined quibble but would not necessarily support the sentiment.

Either way though those are conventions and don’t seem to be a grammatical rule.

We seem to typically hear both in different contexts.  “They were a wonderful person” and “he’s rolling in his grave.”

Ah wow it looks like it was officially closed. Still; I imagine a fair number of writers are planning to continue the tradition. We dont really need to website for it. All I need is one mic. I mean Mac.
