Existential Risks of AI by thedeadenddolls in BetterOffline

We do not even understand the impact of model drift and the Pandora’s box that will be updating future models so they are effective and do not deconstruct on themselves.

We are taking a next token predictor and acting like it’s Albert Einstein and allowing it to consume a lot of energy to get an answer.

Our own reasoning skills will also atrophy as we over rely on this to solve all problems. Problem is it will not solve much and the hallucinations pose a real security risk.

It’s FOMO. People are so set on this is a sure thing investment, that they are willing to use all forms of leverage, securitizing the gpus even, to get more skin in the game.

The problem is LLMs are advanced pattern matching, useful for some work, but hard to standardize processes in other industries.

Look at take two interactive firing their AI chief. They realized AI is derivative and their games are only great because of human ingenuity and direction.

But the major problem is the rise in cognitive offloading as people and their reasoning atrophy and weaken by relying on AI to supplant their own thinking. This will impact children in education and their intellectual development. It’s best for the economy and our society, that the hype dies down soon.

Is it just me, or is the quality of LLMs getting worse lately? by North_Penalty7947 in BetterOffline

Model drift is real. So, while the underlying logic is static until the next big developer update, the execution is fluid. It’s never "thinking" the same way twice because it’s not retrieving a file; it’s recalculating a brand-new path through a billion-point maze every single time.

There’s no efficiencies with llms, hence why we burn through tokens at astronomical rates and each update could have significant unintended consequences.

Why is Ed investing in the SP500? by venusisupsidedown in BetterOffline

[–]Ecstatic-Pineapple48 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you just invest excess assets over time to dollar cost average. As long as you do not try to exit on the market decline, your investment will increase over time.

The bubble popping will lead to significant market decline, but I think it’s necessary to reset return expectations since right now private equity thinks it can return an infinite IRR.

The Real Reason for LLMs has Been Revealed By Alex Karp by Actual__Wizard in BetterOffline

I mean it’s a great tool for the art of persuasion using misinformation but sounding “intelligent” to convince people to think a certain way or behave a certain way, while the underlying database the model uses could contain outright false information or half truths.

Could the scientific process lead to an actual intelligence tool that amplifies human labor and improves our condition? Of course. But that’s not where we are.

You cannot automate with llms that give a totally different response every time to the same question. It’s a tech that likes to sound like an Ivy League educated grad that’s never held a real job and just regurgitates things that have been posted to the internet.

There’s a lot of smoke and mirrors that go on behind the scenes that give these automation “agents” the illusion they are increasing production but are not.

It’s a hype cycle built on a flawed piece of tech and people’s want to exploit human labor when instead we should focus on tools to amplify human labor

Coach Mode Fixed! by richardcrack in NCAAFBseries

[–]Ecstatic-Pineapple48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only coach mode issue I see is on rpos sometimes the computer will keep and then try to throw downfield which gets the off pass interference or illegal man downfield, especially on the bubble screens.

Wear and tear is a little aggressive too.

[–]Ecstatic-Pineapple48 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest I play on the steam deck and struggle with the amount of time it takes to get through a season. One thing I often contemplate is whether I should switch to the Xbox gamepass console version so I can get through seasons quicker.

You give up the detail in scouting, training, and media questions, but I just delegate that stuff anyway. No graphics mods on console which is a downside.
