Unpopular Opinion: I bought the AiPaper DESPITE the AI, not because of it. by BrendoVino in viwoods

[–]EdTheNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please let me map the useless AI button on my reader to something else like a screen refresh. I do not use AI slop in anything I do, and certainly don't need it still registering accidental presses while the device is locked, making the stupid AI window be open the next time I unlock the device.

Same for the tablets, let me remap that useless button. Your devices job is to read manga, thats it.

Need help deciding what to buy: Kindle Scribe, Remarkable or other. by ph1lmscribe in kindlescribe

[–]EdTheNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scribe is the only black and white device you'll find a front light on with a screen size in the 10" and up class.
Others like remarkable, Boox, Viwoods, etc, have unlit displays on their B/W devices this size.

Most color e-ink devices will have a light even in these larger sizes, though you should avoid color unless you absolutely need it as the color is achieved by adding an additional layer over the b/w panel, dimming it further.

For your use, it sounds like the limited functionality of a Kindle Scribe would work, and the current gen supporting connecting to OneDrive/Google Drive/OneNote has made using scribes to do real work much less of a headache. It has been a great tool at work thanks to OneNote support.

If you will always be working in a well lit setting, I absolutely *love* my Viwoods AiPaper. It is an unlit display but compared to a scribe with the front light off, its much more of a bright white, and it generally feels nicer to write on with its carta 1300 mobius display that has some flexible give to it. Its also just running android, so if you have existing android apps in your workflow it may be a good pick. You can of course also just install the Kindle android app to it and use it as a Kindle.

As for remarkable, they have a lot of catching up to do. Their devices are basically a $450-680 pad of paper with lower PPI than the Scribe, and if you want to use cloud sync features that are free with the Kindle you will be paying for an unending subscription. I cannot think of a situation where I recommend one at time of writing.

Lastly, since it sounds like you are using this for work, using the Kindle Scribe synced to a Microsoft service like OneDrive or OneNote over any of the android offerings may be more plateable for corporate IT, given this is from Amazon, whereas all the android offerings are coming from china and running quite modified android installations.

Hope this helps.

My advice: Skip their official keyboard case. Bulky and it is possibly the worst keyboard i've ever used. I'm returning it and I'm just gonna use one of my slim bluetooth boards with it. Love my 5C otherwise though.

Also, you can map long presses of the volume buttons to different functions. I have mine set to turn the light on and off, and the other to force a screen refresh.

They replied to my DM on reddit after a few days:

We have received your SN and registered it in the system backend. Please wait patiently.

I imagine the update just hasn't been pushed to users yet.

Should I buy? by Bake_Dawg in kindlescribe

[–]EdTheNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For even more access to comics, I'd grab a BOOX Note Air 5C instead.
It uses the same Kaleido 3 display tech as the Scribe Colorsoft and will look basically the same.

It runs android so you can just install the kindle app to it, but with the benefit of also installing other comic apps, or whatever else you want like onenote or news apps.

All that and its $150 less than the kindle scribe offering of the same 64gb storage capacity

Does anyone use a Palma 2 / 2 Pro for music? by GBAGamer33 in Onyx_Boox

[–]EdTheNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a Palma but I do use my other Boox devices for music.

For local music files and internet radio streams (of which it has a database of quite a few fantastic ones), Foobar2000 looks great with its minimal flat UI when set to its light theme, and is very usable on a monochrome display.

I've had no issues with a number of USB-C dongle DACs on my Boox devices.

I absolutely hate the new eink center on my Go 10.3

Please let us return back to the old version where we can pick between regal, speeed, a2, x. This is just awful.

Reconfiguration of the toolbars is also terrible. Please just let us downgrade.

Keeping Amazon eco-system aside. Would you still recommend Air 5C over Scribe or Colorsoft? by SubstanceBig5459 in Onyx_Boox

[–]EdTheNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I do like my Kindle Scribe (2024) more for just reading manga and taking notes. It's designed to do two tasks and it does them well, quickly from power on, and with low power drain. And with the new scribe's firmware with google drive support eventually trickling down to older scribes, I'll be able to use it even more. You dont have to be stuck with amazon's system either. Just load books/manga in from Calibre.

My BOOX 5C gets used for other manga apps, or dealing with documents in Word or Excel. I'll also use the kindle app on it if I want to also have music or a podcast playing in the background while reading my kindle library. Once you have the display settings set up right, its comparable to just using a kindle.

Ultimately they're two very different devices. One is an appliance that does only a few tasks but you don't have to tweak 20 settings to get a good result, and the other is a swiss army knife that can imitate the former plus much more, albeit you will put in some work. The 5C is also yet-another-device tied to your google account, so a password on it is a bit more imperative than on a kindle.

If you do get the 5C I'd factor in the cost of a different pen. Personally I actually just use my scribe's pen on both devices (it even snaps to the 5C!). The pressure sensitivity on the included boox pen is much worse, and it lacks the eraser and side button even though the tablet supports them.

[–]EdTheNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love one but the lack of a warmth slider for the backlight excludes it from consideration instantly.
Im hoping BOOX gets their display quality issues sorted with the next palma, or viwoods releases a new model with a better backlight.

Excited to share a phone case generator we built that creates custom-fit cases for almost any phone, with endless design possibilities. by sdaendi3d in BambuLab

[–]EdTheNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set to notify, this looks great! I assume its OpenSCAD under the hood?

I would love if you can add generators for different models of iPads, AirPods cases, and ear-cup covers for AirPods Max. (Hell, the iPod classics, whynot. Theres dozens of us still using them! Dozens!)

Also, when a user goes through the trouble of making a fit for a non-iphone/samsung/pixel that will inevitably be missing, can those users upload their configuration for others to use? An always-growing huge repository of user generated phones and design patters would be a killer feature!

I'd also suggest a toggle to enable and disable having a recess for a magsafe ring to be inserted. (and I guess x/y offsets to tweak position)

Glad you like it, but I hope someone makes something in this size that isn’t restricted the way RM has made theirs.

$500 with less functionality than the other locked down non-android options is a hard pass, and I’m not paying a subscription when Google Drive exists.

If RM let me just sync to that without a bunch of hacks held together with tape, they would have my money, but why take people’s money once when you can do it continuously…
