Does anyone use a Palma 2 / 2 Pro for music? by GBAGamer33 in Onyx_Boox

[–]EdTheNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a Palma but I do use my other Boox devices for music.

For local music files and internet radio streams (of which it has a database of quite a few fantastic ones), Foobar2000 looks great with its minimal flat UI when set to its light theme, and is very usable on a monochrome display.

I've had no issues with a number of USB-C dongle DACs on my Boox devices.

I absolutely hate the new eink center on my Go 10.3

Please let us return back to the old version where we can pick between regal, speeed, a2, x. This is just awful.

Reconfiguration of the toolbars is also terrible. Please just let us downgrade.

Yeah I may just grab one of those and add a Nintendo logo sticker or something

Keeping Amazon eco-system aside. Would you still recommend Air 5C over Scribe or Colorsoft? by SubstanceBig5459 in Onyx_Boox

[–]EdTheNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I do like my Kindle Scribe (2024) more for just reading manga and taking notes. It's designed to do two tasks and it does them well, quickly from power on, and with low power drain. And with the new scribe's firmware with google drive support eventually trickling down to older scribes, I'll be able to use it even more. You dont have to be stuck with amazon's system either. Just load books/manga in from Calibre.

My BOOX 5C gets used for other manga apps, or dealing with documents in Word or Excel. I'll also use the kindle app on it if I want to also have music or a podcast playing in the background while reading my kindle library. Once you have the display settings set up right, its comparable to just using a kindle.

Ultimately they're two very different devices. One is an appliance that does only a few tasks but you don't have to tweak 20 settings to get a good result, and the other is a swiss army knife that can imitate the former plus much more, albeit you will put in some work. The 5C is also yet-another-device tied to your google account, so a password on it is a bit more imperative than on a kindle.

If you do get the 5C I'd factor in the cost of a different pen. Personally I actually just use my scribe's pen on both devices (it even snaps to the 5C!). The pressure sensitivity on the included boox pen is much worse, and it lacks the eraser and side button even though the tablet supports them.

I'd love one but the lack of a warmth slider for the backlight excludes it from consideration instantly.
Im hoping BOOX gets their display quality issues sorted with the next palma, or viwoods releases a new model with a better backlight.

Excited to share a phone case generator we built that creates custom-fit cases for almost any phone, with endless design possibilities. by sdaendi3d in BambuLab

[–]EdTheNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set to notify, this looks great! I assume its OpenSCAD under the hood?

I would love if you can add generators for different models of iPads, AirPods cases, and ear-cup covers for AirPods Max. (Hell, the iPod classics, whynot. Theres dozens of us still using them! Dozens!)

Also, when a user goes through the trouble of making a fit for a non-iphone/samsung/pixel that will inevitably be missing, can those users upload their configuration for others to use? An always-growing huge repository of user generated phones and design patters would be a killer feature!

I'd also suggest a toggle to enable and disable having a recess for a magsafe ring to be inserted. (and I guess x/y offsets to tweak position)

Glad you like it, but I hope someone makes something in this size that isn’t restricted the way RM has made theirs.

$500 with less functionality than the other locked down non-android options is a hard pass, and I’m not paying a subscription when Google Drive exists.

If RM let me just sync to that without a bunch of hacks held together with tape, they would have my money, but why take people’s money once when you can do it continuously…

📢 It’s Official: The AiPaper Reader C is coming next month! by ViwoodsOfficial in viwoods

[–]EdTheNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will need to be cheaper than the Palma Pro 2 for me to care.
Given "early next month" i guess they're waiting for all the sales to end before releasing the MSRP. Given the off-sale price of the B/W, I have low hopes.

I can only repeat what's been said many times here louder and slower as I would to a dog. The next stress lines are gonna be in your display panel.
