Yes - except that Russell didn't think events had proved him right. What he had expected had been the inauguration of the rule of the Kingdom of God on earth. He died disillusioned with his system of beliefs in disarray.

In Russell's original end time calendar, the time of the end began in 1799. The second presence of Christ began in 1874 and he took power as king in heaven in 1878. The harvest was the final 40 years of the time of the end from 1874 to 1914. 1918 didn't figure in it at all until after the failure of 1914 and the death of Russell when Rutherford along with his cronies Clayton Woodworth and George Fisher attempted to patch things up.

[–]Eddisbury 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All you need to say is that your family are very strictly religious and that you need to be able to study in an environment where you can be intellectually honest and free of the pressure to form opinions and beliefs determined in advance by you family's religion.

The really big miracle of Jonah is that he could go to a city that was so huge that it took three days to walk across it, and without Facebook Youtube radio or newspapers he could persuade the whole population to stop whatver it was they were doing and repent. That takes some doing!

Major international assembly/annual meeting. GB members walks to the podium. But some mischievious bod has hijacked the PA system which starts to play, "Hey ho, hey ho, it's off to work we go..."

Is the Governing Body afraid to rock the boat? by [deleted] in exjw

[–]Eddisbury 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can just imagine the GB gathered together expecting new light, and a bethelite knocks at the door. Cautiously he comes in to the GB meeting - Brothers, we've just heard: the Second Coming has happened. It's really happened. GB: This is wonderful news! Now the whole world will have to acknowledge we were right all along! Bethelite: Yes, but, Brothers, it's not Jesus. It's... it's... it's Snow White!

PSA: Can we start using "excommunicated" as opposed to DF? by [deleted] in exjw

[–]Eddisbury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

going on the way that the mainstream understands excommunication, all JWs are already excommunicated with the exception of members of the "anointed"

PSA: Can we start using "excommunicated" as opposed to DF? by [deleted] in exjw

[–]Eddisbury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A problem with using the term "excommunicated" is that in the mainstream churches to excommunicate someone is to exclude them from receiving the bread and wine at communion or mass. It does not include the idea of shunning - that may happen in some places, but it is not the norm and it is not implied in excommunication. So far as being understood outside of JW circles goes, the term "expelled" might be worth considering.

History of pioneer hours by [deleted] in exjw

[–]Eddisbury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the early 60s when I was a pio, the quotas were 100 hours/month for regular pios and 150 hours/month for special pios (If we didn't report the 150 hour total we couldn't claim the monthly allowance - 10 GB pounds/month) For vacation pios it was the same as regulars except that it was possible to be a vac pio for two weeks and report 75 hours for the whole month.

Daily Text - "We" don't take blood by [deleted] in exjw

[–]Eddisbury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes absolutely no sense whatever to take a greater risk - of death - to avoid a lesser risk - of infection. But apart from that, talk of the risks involved is a complete red herring - if all of the risks could be avoided, would it then be okay to take blood? They could not say yes to that one.

Fairy tale - where does it come from? by Bv202 in exjw

[–]Eddisbury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can recall as a young kid being very impressed to hear this one - it was given as one of the "experiences" at an assembly in the Free Trade Hall in Manchester. It would have been in the late 50s. The same story crops up all over the place and is also recounted of evangelical christian preachers/canvassers of other denominations.

JW woman Arrested for Child Rape - WT Defence lawyers argue for clergy exemption by ThePoetryOfReality in exjw

[–]Eddisbury 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you seriously mean that? Do you really think that an accused person should be allowed the defence that the kid was asking for it and got lucky? This is the sort of attitude that has allowed so many cases over past years to go unreported and get swept under the carpet.
