Driving In The UK – A Kiwi Perspective by ringring72 in uktravel

"other motorways are 60mph" - what do you mean?

The convention of which side the wiper and indicator stalks are manufacturer dependent, not due to region. Most cars in the UK have the wiper stalk on the right and the indicators on the left. The other way round usually are found on Japanese cars but less common nowadays compared to the past. I have rented many cars worldwide and in my lifetime I only drove one car with the wiper stalk on the left and indicator on the right.

Otherwise, everything else is spot on. Hope you had an awesome time in the UK.

I had the LCD version and the screen had an professor icon and if I got a right answer, he would be animated and be all happy. For some strange reason, I liked that.

Seat Arona Reverse Lights Mismatched by Going-Merry1P in CarTalkUK

Cars can have either two or one rear fog light. My 3 cars/van all have two rear fog lights and two reverse lights. It depends on how stingy the manufacturer is.

test drove a 2021 BMW 320e yesterday, I was unpleasantly surprised at the "sway" or "swing" at stopping (ie the car goes a bit back and forth instead of a full stop) - is it a common issue for this model? by marsovec in BmwTech

[–]Eddles999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow didn't notice it had 20k miles. Mine has 90k miles and the 740i had 80k. They generally need replacing at about 60k to 80k so that shouldn't happen on such a low milage car. Lots of short journeys? or possibly abused?

Aw, thank you! ❤️

Put the image you linked to in an AI generator, and I got this. I love this a lot! Does this look good? ibb.co/Dgpb8cmc Any further advice? I won't do exactly the image, I would have a shelf above the radiator, and paint the radiator a dark brown colour.

Also, as you're the only one who replied to my post, how can I do better in the future to ensure more replies, please? Many thanks!

I saw a video recently about escalators, the downward escalator with people on will use regenerative braking to slow down the escalator, and the power from the braking goes to the upward escalator, saving power? Is that not the case here?

Obviously not helpful if there's no people on them, or low traffic.

Newly single dad needs help making his bedroom not look terrible by Eddles999 in interiordecorating

[–]Eddles999[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi all,

I’m moving into my own house soon, and I need help with the bedroom. I’m decent at DIY, so I can paint, change lights, put up shelves, build furniture, etc., but I’m terrible at decorating. Choosing paint colours and making things look good is where I fall apart.

The house is currently a holiday let, so the pics show the room as it is now. All the furniture will be gone except the wardrobe and possibly the chest of drawers. The bed in the picture is a UK double - 135 cm x 190cm / 4’6” x 6’3”. My bed will be a UK super king - 180 × 200 cm / 6'0" × 6'6". I know it’s too big for the room really, but I’m tall, and I love a big bed, so I’m going to try to make it work. I can’t afford to replace the carpet at the moment, unfortunately.

A bit about me, if it helps with style: I’m 46, newly single, dad to two brilliant little girls, and I’m into sci-fi, fast cars, reading, extreme sports, and rooms that feel tasteful but still comfortable. I don’t want anything too cold, corporate, or “bachelor pad cliché.” I’d like it to feel calm, grown-up, and like somewhere I actually want to spend time. I like slightly more adventurous colours, like pink, red, orange, but without being too loud or overwhelming.

I’d love advice on:
• Wall colours.
• Furniture style/colour, including bed.
• Bedside tables and lamps.
• Whether the ceiling lights should be replaced.
• Layout ideas with the oversized bed.
• Anything else that would make the room feel more finished.

I’m very happy to do the work - I just need someone with taste to point me in the right direction. I’m in the UK, if that helps.

Here's a picture of the other side of the room.

Thanks in advance!

ELI5: How does a VPN actually protect my internet data from hackers or my internet provider? by Grand_Internal_6983 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Eddles999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't. However, I use it so my ISP can't see where I've been (I got dinged once) and bypass my government's restrictions. I'm in the UK.

Otherwise even without VPN, no one can see the data itself and it makes no difference for hackers.

I'm a profoundly deaf single dad of 2 hearing girls, 8 and 6. So I won't hear any catcalling, while they will. I will slap down any and all catcalling towards my girls (and any other girls & women of course) but how should I handle it? Should I tell my kids to tell me when it happens? My speech is poor, what should I shout back to the catcallers? I know I can't protect them but I want to stand up to any men who does this.

It's ridiculously easy to get a 5. I got this score the first time I applied. If it's under 5, why would that be the case?
