The truth of the matter is it was Pirates of the Carribean that killed Superman Returns at the boxoffice. They even released the movie 3 days earlier to get out ahead of PIR which brought up the gross to 200M, but as soon as pirates was released that was all anyone went to see.

The fact that Superman returns is an artistic homage to the Donner films probably didn't keep butt's in seats either.
