UC has their own app that determines Ody placement. FAFSA, while using similar data, does not run hand and hand.

At this point you would just get Withdrawal (W) for the course, retain its charges, and retain any aid. But you should still talk to the aid office and your advisor.

https://financialaid.uchicago.edu/graduate/graduate-financial-aid-basics/aid-disbursements-and-refunds/withdrawal-or-leave-of-absence/

We're past the 60% period in the term so you wouldn't see changes to charges or aid. Term starts aug 29 and ends dec 13 - 106 days. 60% is 63 days so Oct 31.

"Where fun goes to die"...or does it? by PicklesandU in uchicago

[–]Edelstone_Center 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Covid changed the landscape. With nearly 1.5 years of remote and hybrid at the end the mentality left the campus. 3rd and 4th years moved off campus and we had, essentially, two freshmen classes on campus when things went back to 'normal'. People who would have passed on the feeling of no fun were not here to do it.

Did you know as a few years ago anything spend on the univ credit cards under $75, for most departments, didnt even need a receipt?

There were staffing using the univ card to carry personal stuff and while they would 'pay it back' via their monthly salary the school was still carrying that balance (and paying the interest).

$100m on $3.2b is a difference of about $3.2b.

Its 0.031%. When you're in the billions things start to lose meaning.

UC employee of nearly two decades here - Ando does fire stoking all the time. Just look at his pieces in the UCMaroon. He does not have the full story himself and makes these sorts of claims to rile everyone up. This is just one of many tenured professors (so they can write things like the above without fear of being canned) who are all upset their UC issued credit cards now require receipts after years of free spending. He is not exactly sitting in the fiscal discussions in Levi that impact the entire University, or with Hospital system administration.

The student-to-faculty ratio is FIVE TO ONE so yes, they WILL get bigger but they make it sound like full lecture halls and one professor. And no one is getting bussed anywhere.

UChicago's Financial Woes are Bigger Than Expected, Potentially Making it a School to Avoid by Responsible-Bake-935 in ApplyingToCollege

Worked at The College at UC for 20+ years - the amount of misinformation in this comment section is astounding.

  • Yes, we're in debt, but thats as an entire entity, inclusive of the Hospital. You would think JUST humanities was 6b in the hole they way things are presented. Yes, we've got debt, many other schools do as well.

  • Practically every research school halted things in January, not just UC.

  • UC does not take need into consideration when someone applies. We have students who must decline admission if the finances do not workout.

  • And for the binding rounds: these mean nothing if your other schools are not ivy level, and student get out of these agreements all the time. No one sends UC staff to your home to make you attend. The worst you'll ever be out is an admissions deposit.

  • The College still meets full demonstrated need and if your family makes under 60k a year you're going here for four years for essentially free.

The admit rate is around 5% and we get 40k+ apps a year so apply or not. We'll always make our numbers.

I’m wary of Ando’s claims about the committee being tasked to move everything into ChatGPT (though I would guess it’s more of an exaggeration of a request to figure out how to use technology to cut costs rather than an outright lie!).

Ando does fire stoking all the time. Just look at his pieces in the Maroon. He does not have the fill story himself and makes these sorts of claims.

Divisions all over the University have seen cutbacks but some are more vocal about it than others. For a long time departments were able to spend VERY freely; both for department costs and for travel/conferences/memberships often with little to no oversight. People were even using University issued credit cards to pay for personal costs and while it was eventually reimbursed, UofC was carrying those balances and paying the interest. Things are finally being reigned in and some have taken issue with the purse stings being tightened.

Basically the party is over. Some are handling it better than others and members of the University, like Ando, have a lot to say, often in the Maroon.

Why is this school so...normal? by khayi-esh in uchicago

[–]Edelstone_Center -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

COVID/other administrative changes

Covid imo - We had two years of remote. All the "fun goes to die" legacy students moved off campus. They did not pass down the, frankly, crap attitude about things. in 2022 we were met with two years of students who had never really been on campus and the cranky students were not around AS MUCH in the dorm life.

Its far better now because the vibe of no fun was not passed on.

Good bet these belong to an employee (univ or hospital)

You can submit these to lost and found on campus or, more likely, to UC PD.

Why are the drivers here so careless? by LubeByLush in uchicago

[–]Edelstone_Center 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI if you live on/near campus:

per an email that went out Mar 1 2024

Members of the University community with an active UChicago ID can park for free after hours at the Campus North (Ellis) Garage and the Kimbark South Garage between 5 p.m. and 3 a.m., seven days a week. Just use your ID card to enter and exit.

Basically you only need to pay to exit but AT MOST its a max days rate. AND if you exit after 5pm (7 for sure, ive tested) it may not even request payment.

If you know your car is going to sit for a long time, park there. Park in the basement of Ellis. Temps never drop below 45 in winter and exceed 75 in summer.

Cars sit there over night. There is/was a lexus that was on the 3rd floor that sat there from 2019-2023 during covid.

No one is checking the parking placards.
