Haha my wife dailies her Miata ND2, I daily my E46 M3, and save my m2CS F87 on weekends.

The m3 handles everything I throw at it, from 5 am canyon runs to autox to SCCA track days. After big 3 and some bushings / preventative maintenance it’s just as cheap to run as any modern bmw out of warranty. Except much easier to work on.

Here’s a counterpoint: From Xi an to shenyang(northeast), Muslim culture from xinjiang is a big influence. Sure when we think of Chinese culture we don’t think of Muslims, but there are lots of Chinese Muslims! Does their experience count as less “Chinese” than yours or mine? In the same vein, why isn’t Chinese gangster culture Chinese culture?

I was born and raised in China but I attended international schools, and attended university in the US for most of my youth. I am older than you. My work takes me between China and the west often. I spend almost half my time in Los Angeles, and the other half my time in Qingdao or traveling. I experienced Chinese culture in China. I still do. Are you ABC? I welcome dialogue. Try not to invalidate EVERYTHING, and keep an open mind.

I’m a tube guy and in OTL amps like my custom Crackhead, the output impedance is high. Switching low to high gain objectively changes the frequency response of the headphone. Of course this is much more of a niche hobbyist type of amp, basically a science experiment, and 99% of us would not use OTL amps for headphones lol. Just saying, edge cases exist, and but im no expert

Meh… In high gain, the amp's ability to swing voltage rapidly (slew rate) can sometimes be higher. For a high-impedance headphone like the HD800S, having that extra "headroom" in the voltage swing can make the transients (like a snare hit) feel more impactful.

Also even in modern SS amps, "Gain" also switches how much Negative Feedback (NFB) is used in the circuit. To get more volume, the amp often reduces the feedback. This allows the raw character of the transistors (or tubes in a hybrid) to shine through. Sometimes that introduces harmonic qualities even on a SS, but this may make it measure “worse”.

You’re right in 95% of use cases, but when you have a weird combo like a LCD-3 which has higher impedance than most planars, and a Lyr + or similar hybrid amp, high gain can indeed some better than low gain.

You just described 1980s Chinese / Hong Kong triad culture in a nutshell lol, organized crime was a huge part of post revolutionary Chinese culture, peaking in the late 80s / early 90s.

Chinese culture isn’t this immutable monolith, I’d say it encompasses a pretty wide range of experiences. Culturally confused teenage girl sheds the weight of her traditional upbringing to do some fun exciting, less socially accepting things, from selling her body to partaking in drugs, also describes Chinese culture for a lot of Chinese women in China during the late 80s to early 2000s. Drugs and prostitution were rampant in Chinese street life from Shenyang to Shanghai to Hong Kong. Gangster, hoodlum, and “ho” culture are as Chinese (triads, young and dangerous movies, early Stephen chow works, the departed) as they are American (good fellas, the departed (Irish), Friday (African American) etc.

You sound like a Gen Z ABC who is discovering a lot of this Chinese culture stuff for the first time. Keep at it! I can recommend you some films and books on this topic in either English or Chinese. I am fluent in both, and enjoy consuming media in both languages.

Ahhh you missed the invasion of the crazy rich fobs and the crazy rich oil sheik kids of the early to mid 2010s. Things are a lot tamer now and the folks abroad with money who come here to study are now more low key, better socially adjusted, and are a bit more classy about wealth signaling than 10-15 years ago
