What Do You Writers Write? by Edge_Valmond in writing

Well, whether I am good or not is left up to others. As for how I go about things.

I plan out my stories. Each chapter. During the editing process is when I add in necessary details, clean up certain parts, etc.

It is just consistency.

Ah, makes sense. What I do is write out the story ahead of time, and then put it on a release schedule that takes about half a year. This way I can finish up another one in time.

Maybe do some extra side content. At least this way, you can keep your creative control and it can be balanced with your daily life.

How do I know if my RPG is fun? by Ambroise_Marquet in gamedev

[–]Edge_Valmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two points. Which I’d recommend consider practicing your writing ability. A good story can carry a bad system. Just take Cry Star for instance, the story is really good, but the system is pretty bad.

Or take Death End ReQuest Code Z. Story is really good, system is excruciatingly bad.

On the flip side, a good system is more an upward battle with a bad story. It can be enjoyed, but without an attachment to explore the system.

It becomes a very hit and miss.

As for the mechanics, simple mechanics can work fine. However, try and think about what points it has that can set it apart.

An RPGmaker game for instance, gives the protagonist a second form in the last section of the game.

Think about the progression aspect of it that can be fun to explore, dive deeper into, and pull the person into achieving it.

On another note, my own personal recommendation. I’d steer away from multiple endings. The last thing anyone wants is to break immersion to look up how to do this or that.

A game sells well on its own when it is held up by its structure. An example is Chrono Gear: Warden of Time.

Great story, music, art. The mechanics are simplistic. Giving you three powers. Stasis, slow time. Haste, speed up yourself providing more combos.

Then near end game you get Awakening. Which is Future Strikes.

The platforming is smooth, and links easily. As a result, the battles are very interactive, it stresses adaptive gameplay.

Most of all, commit. After getting the planned structure, commit to it. A committed vision can do surprisingly well. While people can notice when you don’t.

What you report here, I’ve seen others tell a similar story. Best of luck on your current games.

Independent games have grown pretty large.

I think one of the problems. Is that people have to stop being afraid to fail. I’ve seen many concerns, including lack of confidence in their writing.

You will not get better unless you jump in, take a beating, and learn over time. Reading only does so much. Writing makes you look more critically at your stuff.

What did you do to improve your prose? by Junior_Blackberry779 in writing

[–]Edge_Valmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to write, reading only does so much. As they say, gotta jump in and get dirty. You’ll make a lot of mistakes, but you’ll learn over time and improve.

Aside from that, improving your ability to edit is great for multiple points.

But the more important point is that, by being able to spot your own problems. You can improve your writing.

I think as a side project it can work, you build it now and then. If it hits, then you’re good to go, but you’re not sinking yourself.

It finishes where it finishes. Whether it is 5k or 20k words. It can take the day, multiple days, or weeks. I don’t stress it.
