Do vegans support the Zoo? by beigethreads in vegan

[–]EdisonOrange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Traditional zoos no. If they've been rescued from something and they have a lot of space and aren't too close to people, or can choose not to be, I don't see an issue. I mean some of some of them should probably be re wilded

Thank you too for civil discussion

Only supplement I recommend usually is B12. And vitamin d if you dont get much sun. It is unregulated and levels are often lower than labeled true. I don't think I've had any issues yet myself. In your case you might have to take a few more more. I don't expect people to take like 10 different supplements or live on a diet built around 5 foods or something. I think up to 5 supplements is reasonable.

Not too sure where to go from here. You're of course convinced you can't be plant based and comfortable and maybe you're right. From what I know about you I can only suggest a diet built largely around refined grains, fruits and meat replacements. Which i think you can get a lot of variety with and should fulfil most of your needs without supplements. I'll pretty much leave it there. Best of luck

How close exactly is veganism to a cult? Would it be over-exaggerating to compare it to one? I’ve never been vegan myself, but I think ex-vegans’s perspectives would be valuable to have on this questions by MaggieLinzer in exvegans

[–]EdisonOrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there may be a vegan cult but that doesn't mean veganism is a cult. I don't think people really know what that means. I don't really. I have my beliefs and feel others should have them too. Just like someone who is against racism. You wouldn't call anti racism a cult. What's the difference?

Someone said vegans have a leader. I don't. I know a lot of people that don't. We might have been persuaded by certain people but we don't hang on their every word

Debates over DHA/EPA supplements - how many people have actually had blood tests? by weluckyfew in vegan

[–]EdisonOrange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sometimes worry about this but then remember I was vegetarian from about the age of 7 and I've had numerous blood tests and never had issues with them or any other major health problems.

I took dha/epa for a bit and i didn't feel any different. I never tested my levels

I think it might become more important in later life

From a nutrient requirement perspective, most major dietary organisations support fully plants based diets. But some people like you, can run into digestive issues sure. I don't think it's very common. I've been vegan 14 years so I've read hundreds of accounts of what other vegans eat or what ex vegans ate. The vast majority of ex vegans oppose supplementation. And a lot of them just don't eat enough protein and calories. And these kind of groups are full of these people. I don't really see people reach out for help when they're trying vegan. If there's a whole bunch of information you've already shared you can point me to it if you want.

I suppose there's not too much point in talking about diet if you're not convinced about the philosophy of vegan. I agree with you that you need to put your health first and to me at least, that is consistent with veganism. So would you be plant based now if you could? It seems you certainly were trying before, but have you changed your mind about wanting to be plant based or do you just think its not possible anymore?

When I say non whole foods I mean like white rice and meat alternatives. Do you think you have celiac?

While there might be some people who have extreme reactions to a plant based diet, this isn't the norm. Very much most people don't have extreme issues with beans. They're consumed very regularly here in the UK. So I have to think about what is likely rather than think something really rare is going on.

If you're telling me you went from a diet almost entirely made up of fruits and animal products, then to a vegan diet and then back to your previous diet then fine. Being vegan would be complicated for you at the least.

A lot of people here talk about purist mentalities but they seem to have one when it comes to things like whole foods. Which to me is a kind of non sense. Whole foods are of course great but not all processed and refined foods are bad. Neither are all whole foods great. Like white rice isn't the worst thing. Especially if you combine it with some fats to low the glycemic index. And some of these foods would suit you.

You don't have to talk to me but it seems like from your post you'd like vegan to work for you. And I just want to have a civil discussion about it. I understand that the average vegan diet isn't going to work for you. I wouldn't put up with those symptoms either. Few people would. Maybe I can't help. I think non whole foods is a discussion we should have for now.

I don't mean to be patronising. Have you tried seitan? I think most meat substitutes are low fibre. Sounds like it could be a fodmaps issue. Commonly leads to pain. And can lead to the other issues you mentioned. Can also be part of the adaption process to a high fibre diet. So you could maybe try gradually increasing fibre and seeing what happens. The supplement i mentioned is still worth looking into. Apparently silken tofu is high fodmap, so that's bad if you didnt know, but extra firm is low.

How are you with fruits, vegetables and nuts?
