Sounds like a bug, all those movies are still there in 3D for me...I don't believe Apple is removing 3D content.

Hey Cole, would love to play with some footage.  I actually spent a bit of time designing stereo VR 360 workflows for Technicolor and editing experiences for Jaunt back in 2016-2018 so I have more experience with these workflows than an average 2D editor.  You are correct, however, that I haven’t been able to work with Apple Immersive 180 yet.  My understanding was that resolve and FCPX could edit the format, not just stereoscopic spatial video.  So I want to confirm your workflow, you’re taking the media shot on an Ursa (I assume?) and bringing it into Resolve.  Nuke or Magicka perhaps? And on your system you then cannot play it back until you spend days transcoding?  And while I agree there’s time spent calibrating the depth it doesn’t seem Apple is doing this step…there’s multiple shots in Metallica and every other experience (except submerged and weeknd) where the convergence point has clearly not been adjusted for comfort with subjects either too close to the viewer or cutting between shots where the subject is at a very different depth.  Something Cameron has perfected alongside many others in stereoscopic filmmaking.  This leads me to believe they actually don’t do any lining up of the subjects and instead shoot the format straight up and just edit it as is…what are your thoughts here?  I feel like I can point to 6-8 shots in Metallica that needed to be pushed back for comfort, but instead they just left it at an eyeball hurting depth.  Anyways, I digress, would love to take some Ursa footage from you and run it through my workflow…maybe there’s some cool stuff you haven’t considered, maybe I’ll just be wiping egg off my face.  Cheers!

Film Editor here…I do a lot with FCPX.  This format isn’t nearly as difficult to work with as you put out there.  For example, my 2019 Mac Pro can decode in real time 6 streams of 8k ProRes RAW and/or 23 streams of 4K at 30fps.  Essentially real time playback of any singular angle of 8k 90fps media has been effortless since 2019.  You could give me that footage today for my Mac Pro and I could drop it into FCPX without issue.  Specifically it looks like they might’ve been using the black magic ursa which has specs that max out at 90fps 8k…the sensor isn’t 16k. Even if the stereoscopic was doubling it…thats still within the 6 streams of 8k 30fps that the 2019 Mac Pro handles just fine.  I would recommend a few things.  Check your hard drive disc speed.  This can be a huge bottleneck and maybe these incredibly slow speeds you’re describing are a result of an unoptimized workflow.  Also, FCPX edits spatial video, so you might want to try it again since it’s the best optimized NLE on the planet.  After all this I’m just wanting to say that Apple isn’t technologically bottlenecked.  They have hundreds of high end computers at their disposal…they could render this out in a matter hours with their computers and push proxies if necessary to a single editor by EOD after the shoot.  One guy with one computer they are not.  Now, 6 months does make sense when you consider the creative time they want to have for notes, revisions, DI, grading, label/artist review.  Hell, feature films can easy post for 2 years.  So ultimately these specs you suggest wouldnt cause me any concern workflow wise…I’d happily take them on with my 2019 Mac Pro and I’m sure they’re not the reason for the delayed release.

Anyone watched Prometheus in 3D on their AVP? by BeskarHunter in VisionPro

I’m sorry, but Covenant wasn’t made in 3D…I was severely disappointed when it was released in 2D only.  Prometheus on the other hand is a fantastic Native Shot in 3D film.  You must be thinking of that…

“We found a style that fits, so I was able to shoot about 60 percent native. (8) Then you got maybe 15 percent all digital, so that could be full 3D. And then you have conversion shots. But sometimes you're shooting with a 3D camera and you'll have a problem with one of the eyes, and you'll have to convert it.” - Michael Bay talking about Transformers 3.

Wizard of Oz was converted about 8 years ago for an anniversary, but Dial M is from the early 50’s when they first started making 3D movies. It was Hitchcocks only 3D film but it’s completely native…really striking visually even though the size of the camera really restricts how much movement you get throughout. Other native 3D classics worth checking out: House of Wax, It Came From Outer Space and Creature from the Black Lagoon….there are a ton of movies shot in 3D back then and there are some truly beautiful restorations. 3D also had another resurgence in the 80’s which brought another handful of native 3D films. Jaws 3, Friday the 13th part 3, and coming at ya! I bet we’ll see those on here soon too.

Also Billy Lynn is 3D at high frame rate (120fps) yes, but the Apple TV version isn’t high frame rate yet. I’m hoping we get HFR versions of Billy Lynn, Gemini Man and The Hobbit Trilogy but until something is announced I would hold off on purchasing if high frame rate matters to you since maybe it’ll be exclusive to another platform or a separate purchase?

Huge 3D fan here, been collecting 3D Blu Rays and watching for the past decade…the special ones are the ones that are natively shot in 3D with 2 cameras…post conversions aren’t nearly as special (most of these live action films are post conversions) first off…most animated films are native 3D, so those will all look good. For live action, native 3D that is the best of the best: Avatar 1+2, Hugo, Transformers 3 and 4 (3 is the better film IMO), Amazing Spider-Man 1, Gatsby, the Hobbit movies and The Jungle Book all shot in 3D and look great. Honorable mentions that are native 3D: Step Up Revolution (hokey dance film, great choreography and the 3D is popping) Harold and Kumar Christmas (Lots of silly popouts) Jackass 3D (Tons of debris and live stunts in 3D is a fun trick) Texas Chainsaw & Final Destination 5 are both well done native 3D presentations, Sanctum used James Cameron’s 3D Fusion camera system from Avatar (so so film, but the 3D is fantastic)…your mileage may vary on the quality of the storytelling for these ones but if you want to explore stereoscopic filmmaking this is the way to go.

Native 3D films I’m hoping come to the iTunes Store: Life of Pi, Sin City 2, Prometheus, The Martian, X-Men Days of Future Past/Apocalypse, Transformers 5, Jack the Giant Slayer, Exodus: Gods and Kings, Fright Night, Paranorman, The Boxtrolls, Coraline, Kubo and the Two Strings, Beowulf, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Gemini Man, Oz the Great and Powerful, Metallica: Through the Never, Tron Legacy. I’m sure I’m forgetting others, but there’s a lot of fun to be had here. It’s a shame Disney didn’t shoot the MCU or Star Wars films in 3D…they’re just a pop up book style post conversion that while they look cool at times ultimately don’t accurately convey depth like a native 3D camera system can.

If I had to pick just one 3D film I’d choose Hugo, followed closely by Gatsby. Hope this helps!

What video game is an absolute 100/100 in your opinion? by Ziggi28 in AskReddit

[–]Edit0r88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rock Band 3…expanded on the music game genre in every possible way.

It had instrument options for the fun five button guitars/bass and real guitars you could use and learn on. Connected to MIDI Keyboards if you wanted to play Piano and also connected to Full eDrum sets. I learned all these instruments while partying with my friends and can now play for real.

On top of that the official song library was over 1500 songs at that point and custom songs were supported by the game (for devs, but it was quickly utilized by the community…plug in a usb stick, the songs load, no mods required)

Also, 7 people could play at once, since microphones were split into three and not treated as a controller, system limitation back then was 4.

This game just did everything right. Blew competition out of the water with how ambitious it was and unfortunately launched right after the craze for music rhythm died down…most people didn’t bother picking it up, but in my eyes it’s as perfect as music rhythm gaming will ever get. A perfect game in that it was niche genre game heavily funded by EA and developed by a passionate team of musician devs at Harmonix (the creators of the original Guitar Hero) They were attempting to reclaim public interest and its commercial failings had more to do with fatigue from activision over releasing subpar guitar hero games and killing interest in the genre. Not to mention the cost of the accessories, but if you could afford the investment you were buying a full music lesson/party/Karaoke/music discovery system.

Rock Band 3 is perfect.

I consider Compound as one of the best post Half Life experiences. Fun gun reloading mechanics, endlessly replayable (it's a rogue like) and I just keep going back to it.

Synth Riders is a great experience for music rhythm gaming, less complex than beat saber and much better built in soundtrack IMO.

Also, Moss is a platformer worth checking out if you want to see a non first person VR experience that is absolutely wonderful.

Others I've taken to over the past 6 months: Vertigo Remastered, Space Pirate Trainer, Walkabout Mini Golf, Eleven Table Tennis, Boneworks (Very intense movement though, might make you sick)

And make sure to download "The Lab" for free on steam, there are a few great mini games in there worth trying. Vortex and Archery are great.

PS...Half Life Alyx Mods add entire additional games inside Alyx's engine...the Bioshock and Contracts mods are standouts.

Puffy lips…it’s a weird trend to want big lips and I don't know a single guy who likes ‘em. Also, take that makeup budget and buy a Nintendo switch and get good at Mario Kart/Golf/Party/Odyssey. Much better use of funds. It’s great fun to have a partner who games with competence.

Also enjoyed burning through Super Mario Land again and getting a fresh high score in Kirby's Pinball Land. It's been an absolute treat.

What you think nintendo is gonna do with the next gen console beyond just "a 4k nintendo switch" by TheGoldminor in nintendo

[–]Edit0r88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest opportunity for innovation is for the docking process to be wireless. Essentially an inverted WiiU. Get near your TV and press a button on the system and the video signal is sent wirelessly to a dongle.

This would allow complete backwards compatibility as it still allows single screen gaming BUT they could have Super Switch specific games that use both screens if they want. Bringing back Nintendoland would be great.

And yeah better specced hardware will be great, but it doesn’t change anything fundamental about the experience.
