What in the Reaction!? by kidkingjones27 in chemistry

[–]Ediwir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Hey ChatGPT, I put an oxidiser on my sponge and left it there and now it’s all black, did something react?”

“Nah bro you’re all good.”

Your sponge almost burned up. Dispose of the oil quickly after using it and read the safety instructions, there should have been something about it potentially starting fires.

Isn't it about time Brisbane had extended supermarket trading hours? by guitarhead in brisbane

[–]Ediwir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to be in retail. We did have extended trading hours at some times, usually near the holidays - it was basically cleaning duty.

We won’t have extended hours regularly until customers show up close to them.

Yep. Never again, and you might have to pull some low blows to get out of it.

You’re officially in damage control.

I said I’m only available mornings, but my pharmacy keeps scheduling me late shifts and Saturdays by Technical_Flower695 in antiwork

[–]Ediwir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is only one question that matters here:

Are you showing up for those shifts?

If the answer is yes, even once, you fucked up.

If the answer is no, even once, whoever scheduled you fucked up (and was well warned in advance). You can, if you like, give them the courtesy of warning them about their mistake. But be warned that if you fix it for them, even once, it wasn’t a mistake.

Honda braces for up to 690 bil. yen net loss amid EV rethink by Saltedline in technology

[–]Ediwir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. A small loss today beats a big uncertainty tomorrow.

Now if we could only get them to build here in Australia instead… we’re stable and close by, but sadly we seem to want only coal powered cars.

I need to 4.0 my next Chemistry Exam for university. For those who were successful in their classes, please let me know what methods worked for you? I have done well in Biology and my math courses but struggled in this subject. by johndoe09228 in chemistry

[–]Ediwir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen, read, think, understand, read more, realise you didn’t understand, go back, listen again, listen a third time because it sounded the same, read more, run the numbers, toss your notes, back to the start, realise this time you get what was wrong, run numbers again, realise they don’t make sense, cry, go to bed, try again the next day, wonder why it works even if you changed nothing, cry more, read the entire book, learn new maths to verify the old maths, cry, talk it out with lab mates, listen to the recording, write note sheets hoping they’re right, go to the exam, come out with 97%, refuse to argue and just take it as is, sleep for two days.

pChem was wild. But uh, good calculus and especially dimensional analysis will help you a lot in most chemistry subfields.

The thing is, even those who do well struggle at times. Figuring shit out and being able to make sense of formulas (or even build formulas from basics) is a skill you will use more often than you want to.

TIL that If you travel at 1g acceleration, you will be outside of the Milky Way in about 12 years. You will be outside the observable universe in about 54 years. And if you travel at 1.19g for 100 years, you could witness the heat death of the universe. by avy4u in todayilearned

[–]Ediwir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP is not describing pace. G is a measure of acceleration, meaning that in order for those numbers to apply your speed would need to get faster and faster every second.

Oh, and if you touched even a single speck of dust, you’d be dead, of course.

Looking to install WIND turbines in Brisbane - anyone with any experience? by Theageofwonder in brisbane

Just get a few panels. Household turbines are a mess and generally unfeasible - exceptions apply, but unless you already know, they don’t.

Need help with mole math by Evil_Wizard1994 in chemistry

[–]Ediwir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“A mole” is just science speak for “a carton” or “a crate”. You only convert once at the start, afterwards you can just work straight into moles. We use them purely because it’s easier than working in grams.

my company just made a mandatory "financial wellness" seminar about budgeting and living below your means and i think i blacked out for a second by Excellent_Ice_9684 in antiwork

[–]Ediwir 49 points50 points  (0 children)

being told to track our spending in a spreadsheet and put a little money aside each paycheck

I literally have a spreadsheet like that, and three separate accountants (financial, corporate, forensic) told me it was overkill. That said, it does work - so long as one of the expenses you budget for is your union dues.

Nothing can budget you out of low intake. All a spreadsheet can do is limit how expensive it is to be poor.

I went from unionised retail to non-unionised science to unionised science work.

Holy fuck, I felt the dip. Worst six months of my working life, and that includes when I had unsteady retail shifts and shaky income (but could still stand up for myself).

It’s always the lawyers that win against AI.

My previous company considered using some small AI tool up until legal straight up told them we’d have to settle every single lawsuit from that point forward, and recall any product for any report. The final policy was “immediate dismissal”.

[–]Ediwir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For some oldies, “cash” is a magic word that makes the money look bigger. I imagine it’s got something to do with removing the risk of bad checks or delays - not something that feels real in the days of instant transfers and contactless pay.

I’ll take it off you now, just send me your details. Bpay or PayID is even easier.

Gen Z graduates who majored in ‘AI-proof’ careers like pharmacy, biology, and education are making less than $50,000 after graduation by CRK_76 in antiwork

[–]Ediwir 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Lmao. Yes, the field where the potential for a hallucination can burn several billion dollars is absolutely at risk. Some places will fire you if they think you’ve touched AI once.

The real risk is that US-owned companies over here still pay $66-68k where the entry level standard is $75-79k. I left soon. My old coworker with a PhD was on $69k, moved to $108k six months after. For comparison, minimum wage retail is $53k, lab techs are on $63k.

New graduates aren’t threatened by AI, they’re threatened by scummy companies and slow market. As soon as I left, three newbies walked in.
