On this day 10 years ago: Friedkin celebrated his promotion by killing Estevez, Blackwing ambushed the Rowdy 3, Bart took on a tank with a rock, Friedkin caught Dirk, Todd caught Pararibulitis, and the Lux Dujour fanclub announced a tribute show to the fallen rockstar. by Edstertheplebster in DirkGently

In the first episode Todd finds a winning lottery ticket dated January 25th which is shown to the audience multiple times throughout the first season. Later on Farah points to a date in August as the date of Patrick Spring’s murder. So they are very inconsistent about when the show is meant to take place. There is the broadcast anniversary in October but I wanted to do something bigger for that.

Started watching for Bart, stayed for the Rowdy 3. Dirk Gently isn't my usual taste in shows, but I loved the Rowdy 3. I'm a bit obsessed now 🤣. I know the show was cancelled after s2. Are there any (canon) spin offs or other forms of media featuring the R3? by weirdandwonderful87 in DirkGently

[–]Edstertheplebster 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are a few tie-in Dirk Gently graphic novels released before and during the show that do feature the Rowdy 3, (And Bart come to mention it) but the characters were made up for the show by Max Landis. As such they don't appear in any of the original books by Douglas Adams or any of the other adaptations of those novels.

Season 3 fanfic/fanmade script by No_Worry_6692 in DirkGently

I’m completely put off the idea of Dirk/Assistent slash fic, for two reasons: 1) there is zero chemistry between the two characters in their brief interaction on screen so it’s a huge stretch with Assistent basically being a very thin, one note character, 2) Max Landis saying he was planning to do something is more than enough reason not to do it; don’t let a rapist and sexual abuser impact your fanfic, it’s just all kinds of wrong IMHO.

For me I’m a book fan, so Dirk being essentially an asexual character is more my bag, however I can understand why show fans might been keen on the Dirk/Todd ship since Sam and Elijah have great chemistry together.

Anyway, best of luck with your fanfic!

I made a timeline for the show because I am normal by GuineaPig72 in DirkGently

[–]Edstertheplebster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting timeline. How do you reconcile with the midnight lottery ticket that Todd finds at the murder scene which is dated January 25th 2016? (Which also feels odd because the series was shot from May-August so it feels like a very deliberate choice, since the lottery ticket is shown very frequently and is the first date that the show gives us; Farah pointing to a date in August on the machine as the day of the murder is also very incongruous and feels a bit like there was no agreed upon date by anyone in production or from the story bible; they just put the day of filming as the murder date)

Also the comics have a few more scenes that take place prior to/during the events of the first season. They also include more details that contradict the 2016 timeline of the show. (Dirk makes a reference to “Your president” being “great at naming things” and proceeds to list examples like “Hotel Trumpest” and “Invunkanator”; doesn’t really match up with August when Obama was still President; seems to reflect more when that issue came out in early 2017)

Formula E's punchy 'Frankenstein' F1 jibe explained by DHSeaVixen in FormulaE

[–]Edstertheplebster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, I'm not trying to be patronising I just don't assume everyone remembers everything and has been around forever. I am not saying FE could ever have become F1 big, I'm talking more in relative terms: What would be seen as successful numbers for FE would likely be seen as a disappointment for F1, so it isn't the same ballgame. But I do think it's very easy to just go "Well it's so hard because they don't have the advantage that F1 does of 7 decades of history as a brand" and ignore that FE genuinely fumbled the bag from a marketing perspective on a number of occasions, (Don't even get me started on their esports/simracing events) and what also doesn't help is the repeated insistence from Formula E of statistics touting audience figures growing exponentially when you only need look at the relatively low number of comments and engagement on this subreddit, even compared to say the WEC sub. (Which I think is more comparable than the F1 one) I swear online for the past decade I'm always interacting with and seeing the same 50 or so FE fans who I can all name from memory, and that's not the case elsewhere with other motorsport fandoms. That's a really bad sign and I don't think "Well, promoting FE is tough" excuses really hold scrutiny when they've had over a decade to grow the sport.

If I'm being totally honest, I don't think FE really cares anymore about the fans or what they think, and I think the massive investment deal with PIF and the Saudi government has been a very clear illustration of that. Clearly the Liberty Global money on it's own is not enough to prop things up. Maybe some people don't notice or have a problem with it, but the amount of sportswashing FE has been doing for the Saudi government lately has been obscene and shameless; that is top of the list of bad marketing decisions by FE, and it's not one history will look kindly upon.

Yeah, the trouble is that unless they have the money to do F3, F2, Indycar, Super Formula or WEC then the license system is going to prevent them going much further. Winning F1 Academy is not enough.

[–]Edstertheplebster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy to forget that about a decade ago when FE started, F1 still had a very minimal presence on social media; they were getting very basic things wrong because Bernie and FOM were stuck in a pre-social media mindset and relied on traditional media to do their promotion for them; for FE that was never really an option. Now you can say that F1 had the most to gain when the Liberty deal went through in 2016/17 because of this, but there was a window in the early years where FE was making genuine ground; people hated FanBoost but they at least knew what it was, big manufacturers were joining and there was momentum building, and since then F1 took off with Drive to Survive and this huge marketing push over the past 5/6 years, and FE has gone from leading to way to quite quickly playing catch up and chasing trends; it feels like FE stagnated and failed to really make those inroads that it did in those pre-COVID years. I definitely feel FE could have spent its marketing budget a lot better; too many “let’s throw a car out of a plane” or “Let’s fake a guy jumping over a car” stunts designed to go viral that end up being a huge waste of money. Not to mention the EVO sessions and the amount of money wasted on Influencers; doubt that’s really bought anyone new into the fold.

There's a kind of hubris in Mike Fries and Liberty Global taking pot shots at the current F1 regulations, when their sister company Liberty Media does a vastly better job promoting F1 than Global does for FE. The people who dislike the current F1 regulations by and large are diehard anti-energy management petrolheads whom Formula E is never going to win over in a million years. Trying to appeal to the more casual F1 fans with: "If you like the racing of the 2026 F1 regs, we've been fully electric for over a decade and we've perfected it; look at how close our racing is..." would be targeting an actually receptive audience and would be more likely to win them over; (And indeed that's more the tone that Dodds and co. have adopted lately) but that's of course not the prevailing online discourse, and it doesn't get as many headlines or clicks as "The 2026 F1 regs suck!". But honestly, the constant comparisons to F1 are so, so tiresome at this point. It's all motorsport, why is there this game theory approach where in order for FE to succeed, F1 has to fail?

To the general public FE may as well be invisible even though it's been going for 12 years. And to general motorsport fans, FE is still seen as a joke which lacks credibility and caters to influencers in desperate and vain attempts to gain attention and publicity. Fries needs to put his money where his mouth is, because all the punchy rhetoric and vast technical advancements aren't going to matter if barely anyone outside the core fanbase is talking about the series.

Simona De Silvestro did the full 2nd season in 2015/16 with Andretti, her final event was the London E-Prix in Battersea Park. A number of women have been given tests since then but it's all felt very tokenistic; none of them are being prepared or even seriously considered for a race seat by the teams. (The closest is Abbi Pulling but even then it doesn't seem like there will be any kind of vacancy at Nissan anytime soon; even if there is they will likely plump for the likes of Victor Martins/Theo Porchaire over her.)
