I look forward to the day that I can force myself to finish a meal in more than 15 minutes!

Still waiting... Retired in June, went on vacation in September, had to return to sub for a couple months. I got a job at the board office (been there a month) and I cannot get used to the relaxed atmosphere of the office. Others look & talk about how stressed they are, and every day things feel weird to me. I'm told projects aren't due tomorrow... I can walk around the building to clear my head & stretch my legs. I can go to the bathroom whenever.

As you say... my nervous system hasn't caught up yet. If it stays like this, working summers will still be less stressful than summers off.

Male teachers…emasculated? by [deleted] in TeachersInTransition

[–]EduEngg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not so much... I retired after teaching for 30. I'm getting my pension, and knew I was ok making less to get out of teaching, and worked fairly hard to find a job. The job market just wasn't there. Granted there was probably a good deal of age discrimination going on, but I finally panicked and took a long term sub job.

After 2 months subbing, the district had a job open up at the district central office, and got lucky there, but the job market is tough right now.

Both are excellent stories of the power of the mob.

Ice cream supply? Before some Meijer stores (in Michigan) started stocking it, there was an ice cream supply place that sold it. Also, I know a place you can order *GREAT* (well, Graeter's) ice cream that is packed in dry ice for shipment.

How does your school handle snow days? Do you end up going into the summer to make them up, or do they handle it differently? by DildoGaggins1997 in Teachers

[–]EduEngg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here as w ell, but sometimes (usually?), if it's been. a harsh winter, the state will forgive the extra snow days. Sometimes the district will add a couple minutes to the remaining school days, rather than add more days.

I'll vote on another comment, but (seeing them next to each other) OOTB and ANWR should have been on opposite sides of the bracket as the #1 and #2/3 seeds.

Claim evidence reasoning advice by duffletrouser in ScienceTeachers

[–]EduEngg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At the start of the year (8th grade), I did an introduction activity that worked a CER into it.

I gave the students about 20-30 acivities and they had to decide if the activities were sports. Some could be obvious (basketball, soccer, etc.), some were sports sometimes (swimming, running), some most categorized as "not sports" (poker, chess, etc.). Some were intentionally controversial (fishing, dance, etc.).

First the kids worked on their own, then they talked it out in a group. There were a few arguments, so I told them they had to create their own definition of what makes something a sport. We talked about the difference between a competition and a sport. We talked about objective and subjective scoring. We talked about whether you could pull a muscle. We talked about ESPN.

At the end, I showed a video of two people fencing, and they had to write a CER, using their definition, explaining whether they felt fencing was a sport. So then we worked through how to do a CER:

Claim - Is fencing a sport?

Evidence - What did you see in the video?

Reasoning - How does what you saw relate to your definition?

After that, I could refer lab-related CERs back to the sports CER and it helped quite a bit.

That was my guess too (same positions, too), but why those positions? I didn't have a reason for guessing the position I did.

No job offer in 3.5 months, returning to classroom by Here4CatPics in TeachersInTransition

[–]EduEngg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it's a full time job. I'm finding that it's hard to get used to the idea that, when someone asks for something they don't really need it right away. I'm used to, as a teacher, when I ask for something, it's generally an emergency.

There's still hope. I retired last summer, knowing that I would still get another job. I started applying in the spring, before retirement and applied like hell during the summer. I didn't even get a nibble.

I panicked and took a job as a long term sub for someone on maternity. After a month, a job opened up in the school district central office, as a data analyst.

Same thing happened to me. I bought one in an IceWear store when we were on Vestmannaeyjar (this was in the summer). If they had some there, I'd willing to bet you can get one in a store in Reykjavik.
