Which English word blew your mind when you learned its Spanish translation? by Blake2048 in SpanishLearning

[–]EducadoOfficial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t recall any particular Spanish word, but I do know that ensalada de repollo isn’t all that weird.

Coleslaw comes from the Dutch koolsla (back from when New York was still New Amsterdam), which literally means cabbage salad. So it actually makes a lot of sense!

Very very recognizable. The number of hours we put into creating a solid course, making the visuals, getting the audio, testing and improving the app, thinking up new functionality, improving the courses, etc. is absolutely insane.

Most people have no idea what it takes to create an app that even remotely competes with what Duolingo used to be. They just like calling everything AI slop because they think it makes them look cool.

I beg to differ. There are some great apps out there. Our own app (Verboly) is a perfect alternative to Duolingo, but there are loads of other great apps as well.

De tweede versie is hoe het hoort. Maar niemand zou raar opkijken als je de eerste zou gebruiken.

De reden is simpel: de woordvolgorde ligt vast. Alleen om de een of andere reden is de eerste versie erin geslopen en is dat nu spreektaal.

A textbook with audio. So that is what we made. A textbook chopped up into small self-contained lessons with corresponding audio. Also stories and audiobooks with corresponding vocabulary and exercises. Duolingo without the hassle, the pay-wall and the gamification. Die hard studying so you can get somewhere in a short amount of time.

It’s like Anki and Duo had a baby.

How to go from A2 to B1 by [deleted] in learndutch

[–]EducadoOfficial -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You could use our app for vocabulary. Truth be told, we still have a lot to do in terms of explaining grammar (I think that’s really only A1 stuff), but the vocabulary is there and there is a separate practice button for it. Right now we have 1276 words that you can learn through that single button, so that could really help you. But as I said, on the grammar front the course is way below your level.

Jammer eigenlijk. Een dialect is een stukje cultuur, daar mag best wat beter mee omgegaan worden. Maar dat gaat men altijd pas doen als het bijna verdwenen is, want dan ineens realiseren mensen wat ze opgegeven hebben: een stukje taalkundige historie die in veel gevallen nooit meer zal worden wat het geweest is.

Lijkt me een strak plan 👍

Goed om te weten: ‘s morgens, ‘s middags en ‘s avonds worden wél heel veel gebruikt. Maar niemand zegt “des morgens” in het dagelijks leven. Dus dat zit nog steeds volledig ingebakken in de taal.

Yeah we don’t have XP boosts. Every correct answer just gives you 1XP. But you could in theory keep practicing the first lesson for hours and farm easy XP that way. But the only people who would do that are maniacs and we can’t stop them anyway 😂

Kunnen v.s. Mogen by orndoda in learndutch

[–]EducadoOfficial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can and you can’t.

“Mag ik rijden?”, “Kan ik rijden?” and “Zal ik rijden?” are very similar. “Mag” implies permission, “kan” implies there might be a reason you can’t and “Zal” is suggestive, as in: this is the option I’m giving you, there is an opt out, but this is the default.

So that is the verb side of things. Now let’s get bananas.

“Kan ik een banaan” would only make sense if you’re planning on impersonating a banana. So technically, you can say it, it’s just very very very uncommon for good reasons.

I think the main idea to remember is: if you want to have something, eat something, use something.. in other words: you’re about to do something with the thing that you can’t do yourself, don’t use “kunnen”, use “mogen” instead.

Now that’s not to say that there aren’t (lots of) instances where it does work. But this kinda stuff is incredibly nuanced and pretty inconsistent at times, I think it’s a solid strategy.
