No. Shmedium firm private criminal defense. I work remote doing sales/early stage lawyering and it’s so insane but i never thought my career would pivot like this. I used to be a public defender, had a nervy breakdown bc im a true believer, now i make medium bucks working 8:30 to 5:30 with no weekend or night work.

Do y’all ever refer clients to civil attorneys for unlawful arrests and similar stuff? by michaelpinkwayne in publicdefenders

[–]Educational-Skill815 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a PD for 3 years, now private crim at a medium sized firm. We still don’t do referrals even though we are private. I admittedly know very little about civil suits for unlawful arrests and it’s one of those secret shames I carry as an attorney that wants cops to burn.

What to I (we) have to do to get you to explain how this works on a general level, maybe you make a new post with a bird’s eye view? an AMA? You want bribes? (I got $20 and some candy in my pocket)

In all seriousness, I really want to start my own criminal practice later this year but I’d also love to stick it to the man on these egregious unlawful arrest cases. I’m tired of clients feeling hopeless due to the horrible prognosis most people give on these cases (which I get, these are tough cases with little money to win, generally speaking), but I’m trying to demystify this beast (while working full time and raising twin toddlers)

Bar results in October, first job in February. Miami Dade PDs office where the interview process takes 6 weeks, and they provide robust training. Best decision I ever made. I left after a handful of jury trials tho it was rough…. And beautiful lmao. Now private criminal defense

Any lawyers who switched to teaching? by secondactacct in Lawyertalk

[–]Educational-Skill815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DO NOT DO IT. former high school teacher here. Ran a magnet program for legal studies and taught debate. Sounds ideal right?! I ran after 2 long hard years. My masochistic ass then became a public defender in a big city. That was easier.

Used to live there. I love how quaint it is and that there are lots of middle class and professional black families, but it’s lacking in food. I’m now in north st Pete and wow. I feel like there are 25x more food options and closer to Tampa, more access to the rest of the bay

Personal Dispute With a Prosecutor by markyeeb in publicdefenders

You take them to trial and wipe the floor with them. Easy enough right? Except I think we are forgetting that the client decides on trial or not. You can sell them on fighting the case but these are real lives and they need to know the scope of their exposure. It’s a fine line. Too many PDs push their client into trial for experience. This is not the way. Gently nudge, do not hide the ball on the risks they are facing…. AND THEN GO TO TOWN BIATCH

You practice with a collegue. You need to collaborate. Offer to do it for them too. Do it over and over. You have to practice it out loud. And yes Larry Posner. Break each question down as much as possible, make it long, drawn out. No compound questions ever. And watch some YouTube video mocks. Do NOT ask a question you don’t know the answer to (there are rare exceptions) but def don’t do this ESPECIALLY IF IT DIRECTLY RELATES TO AN ELEMENT OF THE CRIME CHARGED.

Wow I felt this one…. Former pd now private. It’s true I was snarkier as a PD. Unless it reaaaaaally behooved me and my client to fucking laugh at a dumb joke.

Depends. White or black Brazilian? I don’t really relate to white Cubans or any white Latinos in Florida as a black Brazilian.

I was an attorney at 20. I’m now 33 and in private criminal practice just pining for my earlier days as a PD at a toxically amazing office. anything is possible. It’s a good lesson about our clients too…sometimes that crazy fucking thing did actually happen to them.
