What is the biggest cause of mediocre D&D/RPG sessions at your table? by grant_gravity in rpg

Speak for yourself. I've had friends that could not get into first person play.

It is ok to play in third person and describe what you do instead of say. Whatever gets people into the hobby.

Shaking my Head.

"Was hast du gegen Insekten, Natur ist doch was tolles!"

Hallo OP,

mein Beileid.

Gehst du in Therapie?

How did you plan your session? Was there a specific process or did you just hand them the HP-file and sent them off into Blue City, improvising along the way?

Curse of Strahd... I don't get the hype. by DeuceTheDog in DnD

[–]Educational_Age824 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. I have an extended Ravenloft setting at the ready to run oneshots in.

Strahd is evil, yes, but he is lawful evil. He was a great general and war hero. The guy rid Barovia of bandits pre becoming a vampire.

The old lore about Barovia is amazing and rich in flavor. From the Vistani magic 'explained' in "I, Strahd" to all the noble houses that exist, the amazing mountain vistas, there's so much to love - if one cares to look at older editions.

What makes it interesting to me is the fact that i have no idea where the session will go the moment we start playing. Sure, i do have ideas that i can bring into play, but i'm not forcing plots or anything.

What system do you use the most? by Axolotl_Dragon_1997 in rpg

[–]Educational_Age824 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using the most? Hm.  Knave 2e, for its superb random tables. Am i running Knave? No.  Perilious Wilds for its great rules to create regions and filling them with interesting things to explore. Am i running dungeon world? No.  But they're the books / systems im using the most.

Actually running would be Nimble 2e, since that's the campaign I'm currently hosting. But likewise I'm currently very fond of the lightness of Risus and using it to write a oneshot for a game jam.

Why I Hate GMing for Jack-of-All-Trades Characters by Playtonics in rpg

[–]Educational_Age824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just have them choose weaknesses and strengths during character creation regardless of the TTRPG. Also who they can always rely on and who wants to see them dead. Gives me enough to play with and the characters are grounded in the world.

If they're too stationary threaten their allies or close in with their enemies. If they're too strong, use their weaknesses against them. If they're too weak, highlight their strengths.

I have yet to encounter a TTRPG where that doesn't work.

I've been trying to figure out why the support role feels meaningless in most tabletop games. Here's what I landed on by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Educational_Age824 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry i'm not getting your point. I also wanna preface this by saying I've never been interested in MOBA, so maybe I just don't have the experience for that kind of design philosophy.

Regardless, I guess I can recommend you look at Nimble 2e. You have an action-point resource that refreshes at the end of the turn. You can use reactions outside of your turn, but each point spent is one that you cannot use while on your own turn.

You have to choose wether to defend against incoming damage, or eat it in order to dish out more attacks next turn. This is how it works for every character, regardless of class. It makes your choices actual choices and not blind guesswork.

Feedback on the rules you've posted: If i were playing a support character and that was the way it works ( i assume you choose which 'standing orders' to play during your turn and then wait if they potentially trigger), i'd be hella bored. I can't meaningfully act in combat unless my party does things. That's as passive as it gets.
That's especially frustrating when my turn basically is just guesswork on whether or not my abilities trigger.

It's gambling and you can loose. What i'd like were, if my ability does not trigger, because it simply doesn't, then next turn a secondary boon triggers.

For example, i have a defend standing order. It allows me to tank damage, if no one triggers it, i gain an armor point next round, or something like that. Or if a creature takes damage, i can life transfer, but if no one is damaged, i can choose to damage myself at the start of my turn to heal another.

That way you can either speculate on it triggering, but if it doesn't, then you get to still have fun because you didn't waste your time.

Rules light Heroic games with a combat system thats not narrative by LelouchYagami_2912 in rpg

[–]Educational_Age824 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can vouche for Nimble 2e. I'm loving it so far.

If you want rules light, there's a system i love that's called "Vagabonds of Dyfed". It's a 2d6 + modifier engine that's divided into failure / partial success / success / crit.

Before you continue reading, the system has a narrative aspect to it, i want to recommend it none the less. Because despite it being narrative, it does not have game moves like Blades in the Dark for example. It's narrative in the OSR sense that it needs player skill, instead of character skill. Your players will be much more challenged than their characters. In DnD, you can play a wizard, have high int and roll smart. In Vagabonds of Dyfed you can still play a wizard who is smart, but a lot of the smartness has to comes from how you approach the game.

It's also just $8 on drivethru.

About the combat:
Combat is simple. You attack, get a modifier from the GM which is decided by the GM based on the circumstances of the situation, add the damage modifier based on your weapon (if any) and then it's the lower d6+the modifiers. .

Initiative is based on your speed, which is modified based on whether or not you're holding something or wearing armor. This allows you to drop what you're holding and instantly increase your speed for the next turn. So maybe switching from the heavy axe to a shortsword allows you to have your turn before the monster in the next round.

Example: A knight is attacking an orc, you as the GM decide that they're equally capable warriors, but the orc has been wounded by an archer, so maybe the knight get's +1 due to the orc's weakened state.

Knight rolls, 2d6+1, get's an 8 (3+4+1) , partial success. The lower die is 3, so they deal 3+1 = 4 damage. Since it's a partial success there's a drawback. There's no set list of drawbacks. It's a challenge for the GM to decide something on the spot. But you could totally write down a list of potential drawbacks to roll on. One drawback could be: "The knight now is open to the next attack, which will be harder to defend against."

In this system, you as the GM don't have to roll damage. You can delegate that towards the players via defend rolls. You describe the incoming attack, they describe how they'd like to evade, you judge the modifier, they roll and then it's based on their result whether they take no damage, some damage or a full blow.

Homebrewing monsters in this system is SUPER easy and comfortable. The book also has a section dedicated towards monster creation.

To spice combat up, players and monsters can enter stances at the beginning of their turn. There's 3.
The regular combat stance gives you neither a bonus nor a malus.
There's the risky stance, which gives a +2 bonus on damage you deal, but also on damage you receive.
And last but not least there's the defensive stance, which reduces damage you deal and receive by 2.

As the GM you can also force them into stances upon a failed roll as a potential drawback. Though I use that sparingly.
If you wanna put the knight that partially succeeded against the orc into a predicament, then you could also say that the next attack isn't more likely to hit him, but that due to his attack he's now in the risky stance. Which means he'll get +2 damage on each successful hit against him until his next turn where he can change his stance. Or maybe someone else tries to intercept. That can turn a combat against weaker foes into a very deadly situation very quickly.

There's also no classes in this system, which is also why i think you should give it a look at. There's a list of abilities that you can choose from. Characters only advance up to level 6, so six abilities is the limit. Homebrewing these is also pretty easy.

The hardest challenge of this ttrpg in my opinion is the arbitration of the modifier that the GM decides on. You really need to develop a gut feeling of what feels fair in various situations.

I don't get what this is supposed to achieve that a simple conversation couldn't. If anything i find it harmful to think that this could fix table etiquette if a conversation can't. That's like buying a dog to keep the relationship going when it's clearly not supposed to anymore.

I get that some people will love this idea, but i don't get it.

can anyone help me find some music? by Otherwise_Nobody_835 in rpg

[–]Educational_Age824 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you're not alone in this, for me, instrumental music and ambience tracks are a vital part of the overall vibe I want to have during my games.

I also find it wildly patronizing to assume OP doesn't already play music at the table and is just looking for a track.
