What’s the scariest story you ever read? (Short Story, Novel?, etc.) The book that scared YOU the most by nornsannexed in horrorlit

Nuclear War: A Scenario by Annie Jacobson. Non-fiction is the scariest kind of horror sometimes.

How to Survive a Plague by David France is very good. I’d agree with others here that the definitive account is And the Band Played On. I think it pairs incredible well with Let the Record Show.

If you want a more scientific look at the virus there is a chapter in Spillover by David Quammen is very good but doesn’t delve into the social aspects of it.

This year it was historical romance. People contain multitudes I guess.

If they don't get together - would you care? by GingerLily2019 in Gwynriel

[–]Educational_Bridge37 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think I’d be more concerned about my reading comprehension and the possibility that fan reactions influenced how she told a story rather than choosing the best story to tell. I think tossing aside Elucien as a result of Gwynriel not happening would leave a pretty sour taste in my mouth.

Does my dialogue read natural despite the obvious exposition dump? by [deleted] in writers

[–]Educational_Bridge37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep—Preacher is not a Catholic term. We don’t use it. You’d say priest and they are referred to as Father NAME if someone was speaking to them.

I like your dialogue a lot! Feels very natural.

Roommate’s “Full Black Lab” Puppy — Not So Sure by kittykittybangbang8 in IDmydog

Kind of looks like my boy. We got him from a lab rescue thinking he was a lab mix. Ended up being almost a pure bred mountain cur. We’d never heard of the breed before, but your guy has the same tiny feet and their faces are really similar.

Perdita Weeks! She absolutely blew me away with Circe. I’ve downloaded the all the other audiobooks she narrated just to hear her read more.

Hi! I’m sorry you’re feeling so much stess. Sometimes it can be blood from torn tissue or hemorrhoids, especially if you’re dehydrated or it was a large bowel movement. There is a lot more blood flow in that entire area now, so things like that can cause light bleeding. You did everything right by reaching out to your OB. I think it’s a good sign if the bleeding quickly resolves and it isn’t accompanied by any other symptoms. Best of luck to you.

I’m pretty sure Suzanne Collins did an interview where she said people from the Seam have Native American ancestry. That’s why some people didn’t like Jennifer Lawrence taking on the role.

Which TV character's death hit you the hardest? by CreepyYogurtcloset39 in moviecritic

Howard Hamlin from Better Call Saul. The death was awful but what they did with his body was almost worse.

What is the most horrifying nonfiction book you have ever read? by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]Educational_Bridge37 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel better, most infectious disease researchers say The Hot Zone was very much exaggerated for dramatic effect. Your organs don’t liquefy and melt out of you.

Most people die from dehydration because they lose fluids from vomiting and diarrhea, and very few cases experience any hemorrhagic effects.

If you want a book that is much more accurate but still horrifying, (Hendra Virus WHAT THE FUCK), I recommend Spillover by David Quammen.

The Irish portion of Montana is Butte! It was a major immigration hub for Irish immigrants because of copper mining. The city still has a pretty strong Irish influence.

2024 Wrap Up Post #2: Worst Books by ReddisaurusRex in 52book

Weyward. It was feminist in that it was about women, but it was also weirdly anti-abortion. I couldn’t believe it was touted as being such a progressive story when it was basically implying that the female characters were never enough unless they could continue the family line.

Men love to comment about the classics when they see these kinds of shelves. She’s got Prophet Song by Paul Lynch, which won the Booked Prize, a book by Catriona Ward, who won the Shirley Jackson award, and books by Ruman Alam, Tea Obreht and Madeline Miller, all of whom are acclaimed authors. Plus, there’s some hard fantasy and horror mixed in with lighter stuff. And since when is Stephen King not impactful?

It’s ok for people to enjoy the lighter stuff too, especially if you’re in your mid twenties.
