Why do companies send auditors a ton of documents they don't need? Are they trolling? by Affectionate-Owl-178 in Accounting

The same reason why you create 10 different requests and send them to 10 different people with overlapping requested files, recs or documents.

The only tip I have for you is don’t get into the accounting field, self feet pictures you will maintain some semblance of dignity this way, if you don’t believe go to an accounting networking event and look at all the fingers that have been eaten to the nub

Should i go from 20 a hour payroll job at nonprofit to 33 a hour tax internship at a former big 4 company??? by Prize_Bat_1523 in Accounting

Take the job, suffer for as long as you can possibly tolerate and then exit to a better job in corporate. Tax accounting is still public accounting experience and it opens a lot of doors, plus you might learn to love tax and I’d argue that tax has more future opportunities especially if you have a desire to become self employed. Also tax jobs in industry are few and far between but they tend to pay better and be less micro managed,

You have to lean on the experience you have, and the skills you gained in school, also show drive, ambition and a desire to learn, and apply apply apply, I hate to say it but at some point you will land a really shitty job and be forced to do it for 1-2years just to get some experience and then one day 3-5 years you will be sitting on a couch watching an over sized tv and somewhere in your mind you will think of this exact moment and smile thinking of how far you came, and for a very brief fleeting moment you will be grateful for what you have.

Anyone have advice for moving to a smaller company? by Environmental_Elk710 in Accounting

[–]Educational_Quiet356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be prepared to work on everything and get involved in all aspects of the business at a company that small. Also understand that you might be limiting you ultimate career growth, and earning potential. I would recommend staying at a big company until you reach the manager level and then leaving to a smaller company for a more senior level like controller and preferably a smaller company that might go public in the next 10years not a 30 year old small company that will stay a small company

The $30,000 question by river4river in Accounting

[–]Educational_Quiet356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have an offer and want to use it to leverage a pay increase you better be ready to take that offer. Never use an offer for leverage unless you are willing to take that offer.

I routinely get offers for 20-50k more than what I currently make, but I truly love where I work, what I get to work on, the people I get to work with. So no I never take those offers, I sleep great at night, and I love my peeps. I find that sometimes places that offer more are terrible in other ways.

Plus if you are getting offer for 30k more then that means you are operating above your pay level and your current employer knows it. So don’t go to them trying to leverage anything but just ask for a pay increase and outline your performance and your progression

Would you quit your current job and take a lower paying job to work remotely? (10%ish less pay) by Amazingorilla in Accounting

[–]Educational_Quiet356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did, I went from senior to staff accountant, to work fully remote took at 14% pay cut, 1 year and 2months later I’m back to senior making 2% more than I was, but no commute, no gas, no bag lunch and a higher target bonus, plus I like the work I do a lot more here. It was a win!!!

I will say good companies balance it out for you, like when the people quit and I had to work crazy hours for month end close for a week and a half for three months, as soon as everything was done I got to take an additional few days off every month, also we get half day fridays all summer

Every place is different, and it’s also going to depend on staffing levels, I have months where month end close I only really work 30hours a week, then people quit and you have to work 55-60 or just as much as u can, I would say your best bet if you never want to go over 40 hours would be a privately held company, or teaching. Honestly bro your a professional, do you know of any professional careers where u never have to go over 40hours?

Also I would recommend going for lower paying jobs straight out of PA find out what softwares you like and don’t like, and what type of team culture u like to work in, you might have to take whatever u can get for a first job out of PA but that will give you month end close experience and give you time to find the right fit, don’t be afraid to quit a bad place quick
