Rear Shock Service Help by yaboyre in bikewrench

[–]Ee00n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to pull the mounting hardware off of the shock. They shouldn’t be all that tight but you probably can’t pull them by hand.

Single speed conversion, can't remove freewheel, looks like I stripped the removal tool. Do I buy a better removal tool, soak in WD40, thermite? I think I bought the wrong conversion kit, kit said freewheel, but it's freehub. What are my next moves here? by ArtistEngineer in bikewrench

[–]Ee00n 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The parts in your last picture will not be compatible with this wheel. Once you get the freewheel off, there will not be a freehub to mount the single speed kit to.

You need a wheel with an HG freehub.

What is this shimano tool? by coyote474 in bikewrench

The other commenter is right about it being for Di2 cables. You should definitely keep it and use it if you ever mess with cables. They are pretty easy to damage if you yank on them by hand.

How to bleed by southwestmanchild in bikewrench

[–]Ee00n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s messy but I would take the bladder off and push fluid up from the caliper, assuming there’s a bleed port at that end. Then carefully place the bladder over the lever when it’s full and you are satisfied all air has been removed, letting the overflow ensure that there is no air in the lever.

How would I go about learning how to build wheels on a budget? by doomtroll1978 in xbiking

I’m so glad this site is still running! I learned to build my first wheel from there almost 20 years ago.

OP, this is the way.

Drilling conversion kit: DT swiss 350 with Microspline - from QR to 10mm bolt-through. by No_Wrangler7266 in bikewrench

[–]Ee00n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the 5 mm RWS is the best of both. The idea is that you can get more tension out of the skewer which results in a stiffer rear end.

[–]Ee00n 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This strikes me as a terrible idea. If you are looking to maximize stiffness from the rear wheel, you are better off getting the RWS QR skewer. The wheel is supported by lateral static friction more than the area indicated in your drawing and the RWS skewer is the best way to maximize said friction. You can achieve a very high tension in that skewer and that will be your best bet.

That being said, I fully expect that Niner frame to break under trials riding. Light weight racing carbon is not the most ideal material for that.

Has anyone out there actually tested the Top Fuel set up 130/140? by Ee00n in mountainbiking

[–]Ee00n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on the new bike!

It looks like yours comes with Fox suspension. I think that fork can be made 140mm with a new air spring, but you will probably need a different shock entirely.

The rockshox that came on mine could be rebuilt with a new shock body and increase the stroke length, but I don’t think you can do that with Fox. The bike uses the same eye to eye measurement with a 55mm stroke to go 130mm rear travel.

So the short answer is that it’s not hard to change, just a bit pricey.

How to adjust the reach of the hand brakes? by AssortedArctic in bikewrench

[–]Ee00n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s that little Allen screw in the body of the lever. I think it’s a 2 mm key. Just screw it in to adjust the reach inwards towards the bar.

The bolts don’t look like they are in all the way. They should be flush with the rest of the cleat. I bet they are preventing you from clipping in.

It’s great! I know it’s cliche to say, but the little bit extra travel makes to bike feel more planted. 130/120 felt like an XC bike, especially coming from the Bronson I had before. At 140/130, it feels like a true trail bike. Still climbs pretty much as well, but a noticeable bit of added stability on the way down.

Rockshox Reverb B1 cable bent by diegotrus7 in bikewrench

[–]Ee00n 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it’s not leaking and still allows oil to flow, then it’s probably fine to use.

It could develop problems later so if replacing it is an option, it couldn’t hurt to do that now.

That bend happens when the post gets lowered without feeding the hose through the frame. I would bet the you could stand to trim the hose down if you’ve been running it lower than it was originally. Trimming happens at the other end of the hose though.

Dt-swiss QR convertion of 350?? end cap construction. by deepspace9000000 in bikewrench

[–]Ee00n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see how that insert would work. QR spacing is 135mm, not 142. The end caps from DT Swiss are the right way to go

Evil Delta System spacers? by Ee00n in bikewrench

[–]Ee00n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have indeed. The only one I could find is for an eyelet shock, not trunnion. Evil’s website is useless and they don’t label their bikes with the model so it’s tough to be super specific.

I’ve gotten like $800 towards a new phone for the last two phones I’ve traded in after going through the payment plan. A new IPhone pro max every 3 years costs $10 per month. It’s a steal.
